What is the best type of slide for playing on acoustic? I have a glass slide and it doesn't sound that great. Thanks. :BEER

I've tried many types, and like more of a "raspy" sound on acoustic slide. I would recommend either a brass pipe or one of the Big Hear porcelain slides. The more porous they are, the better drag you'll get. Good luck.

For Acoustic I use a piece of 3/4" copper pipe.

What kind of glass? I've settled on the thick Pyrex (the biggest Dunlops) after trying everything I could get my hands on (brass, ceramic, real bottle necks, chrome ad nauseum). The thin glass slides sound very different.

For the sound I like. Mass and texture are your friend. I lean towards brass ones that aren't polished super smooth. Gives it a nice scratchy tone, rather than the polished, gooey sound of glass. Either way...it needs to be kinda heavy.

+1 on the 'mass' thing! Big, heavy brass or chrome slides work great w/acoustic & electric guitars. On the subject of texture, I've got an old bottleneck that's got a seam along one side - Scraping that ridge along the wound strings makes for a cool, raspy slide *effect*.

Not a fan of those Dunlop pyrex slides, tho' - Real glass (the thicker the better!) gives a great slide tone, IMO. Lead crystal's the ultimate in glass slides.

I dig clay/porcelain/ceramic slides too. Just retired my 'Moonshine' & 'Mudslide' for a 'Rocky Mountain' slide. This one gets a remarkably robust tone for such a thin, lightweight slide. Really don't know how Doc done it, but he done it!

Moonshine and Mudslide are great and come in many sizes so that you can get a perfect fit.

The Dunlop Brass is still one of my favorite...also the Mudslide... and if you want a glass slide with MASS... Matt Smith sells these "no two alike" handblown and painted slides that are pretty danged amazing... go to www.mattsmithsworld.com and click on the store link. They aren't cheap, but you probably won't find a match for 'em either... if you catch Matt doin a clinic or something he's always got a good selection with him for sale... The other one I like every now and then are the aluminum ones from Heartslide... Have yet to find a Dunlop Pyrex that I just loved, as mentioned in other comments... I can say there's no comparision between their thickest one and the "less than thickest" that Matt is selling... thickness might measure the same but might as well be comparing glass and plastic. All that comes around to say that the Dunlop Brass is still as good a friend as it ever was.... and no chance of breaking one in your pocket, no matter what happens...

Brother....I really like the Planet Waves slides. Most glass or ceramic slides will be too noisey IMO. I have the Carl Simpson slide which is tapered and it works great on both electric and acousitc guitar....

your primary rule is, "the heavier, the better", for tone and sustain. your other rule is, "the lighter, the better", for control. i would say, get the heaviest slide you can that won't smack against your frets. (this will vary from guitar to guitar).

I like the sound of a 5/8" spark-plug socket. It's a tad heavy but it's got great sustain and a good biting tone.

I am still using an old Coriciden bottle - same ones I have had for years. Ya can still find them in junk shops and flea markets.

Heavy and brass is my choice for acoustic.

I really like the feel of the 212 dunlop pyrex. It's a shorty and nice and fat. I play with my pinky on both my resonator and electric. My style is lead and a bit o rhythm too, so I like the versatility of a shorter slide and use standard tuning.

I nevr liked metal all that much, but it's been years since I tried one and I play alot more slide nowadays, so I should probably try one. Here's some slide videos I made (http://www.youtube.com/eyeprod) if anyone is curious.

I've got an old thick brass Mighty Mite I bought in the 70's when I had a Gibson J-45. Has a great tone to it. Like others have noted - if your strings are low you may want to go with a glass model. For glass I use a Dunlop that is small and thick. The label fell off so I can't recall the number.
