Anyone have suggestions on a nice tenor ukulele? I was thinking of something with a pickup. Thinking of a Pono or Kala. Thanks in advance!

Very nice stuff and a good guy to work with. The Island Jazz model is especially cool.

I purchased an "Island Uke" when visiting Kauai about a year or so ago. It's handmade by a local luthier on the island, Raymond Raposa. It's lovely and kicked the butt of anything else in it's price range when I played a boatload of them back to back. It sounds almost like a harp when fingerpicked. Lovely overtones and a great feel all around. This is a less fancy model. He makes more ornate ones as well.

Here's a ton of pics of mine: http://www.pbase.com/infiniteposse/island_uke

I have a GString (http://www.gstringukuleles.com/) 8-string tenor and a KoAloha (http://www.koaloha.com/)soprano. Both good makes. I'm happy with them, and I think the GString in particular has great tone.

If I were looking a bit more up-market, I'd probably go for a Kamaka (http://www.kamakahawaii.com/)(what Jake Shimabakuro (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=puSkP3uym5k) plays).

If you look around, there are also some luthiers who build custom ukuleles - they can be just as pricey as custom guitars and other high-end stringed instruments. I've seen pics of some fantastic one-offs.

You should also check out Compass Rose ukes by Rick Turner/Renaissance Guitars in Santa Cruz, CA. Happily, there a lot of great choices out there.
