I have a question for the amp gurus. I have a vox ac30/6 tb that a few years ago lost sound on me on stage...both the power and standby lights were still on just no sound. I dug it out last week to retube to use for recording. I put brand new JJ tubes in replacing all the tubes. The amp now works but does not have near the volume it used to and it is not clean even at low volume it is distorting. I tried swapping out tubes again
and still no improvement. I used all brand new tubes from the tubestore both times. The only difference I see is the rectifier tube that was in it was labled 5a something and the new rectifier tubes are gz34. Do I have the wrong rectifier tube or is something else going on.....any ideas?

5ar4 = gz34 so that's fine. Simple stuff to check... make sure all input and speaker jacks are tight and clean, tube sockets tight and clean, then get it to a tech if that doesn't help. Could be lots of things... bad filter cap, resistor, cap.

Thanks I will check that....seems early for this thing to have bad caps or components unless they used garbage at the factory. I have amps that have gigged hard since the 70's without any problems. I love the sound of a vox but they sure are flaky.

It is fairly common for a resistor to burn up, especially if one of the tubes goes south and stresses the other components. It should be a simple and cheap repair.
