I've had this amp since 2000 and have had no problems with it, until now.
recently i was playing it and the volume cut out, i thought the power tubes (sovtek 5881 wxt relabelled GT 6l6's) were done, so i bought some replacement tubes(6l6 chp's) and biased them @ 68mv they sounded sweet then the next weekend same thing. i noticed the tubes are orange when in standby then blue when on. both sets of tubes work fine when volume is low but when volume is higher thats when the problem seems to arise. I know the i might be a little underbiased but recieved no specs with my tubes any help would be greatly appreciated thnx:RoCkIn

Whats your plate voltage?

The Hot Rod series has a few known problems... check your PCB and you will see a pair of rectangular 5 watt 470 ohm resistors (white in color). If the board is discolored in that area (turned a bit brown), you might try to retouch the solder joints for those resistors. While you're in there, check the plate load resistors for the phase inverter tube as they are prone to failure as well. Here's a good link to a page on Hot Rod problems:

May also want to check the input jack(s) - I'd replace them if they're the original plastic jobbies.

I had volume drop issues with my HRDx a few years back, and this is what I did (might not be the same problem, but worth a look):

I've managed to fix the crackling noise and volume drop problem. After touching up all the solder points on the tube socket PC boards, I replaced the screen resistors (R61 and R62), the and the PI caps and resistors (C28, C30, R57 and R58). The old resistors had no visible damage, but the ceramic caps looked cracked at the lead ends. Don't know what was causing the problem, but it's all good (for now).
