View Full Version : Ohm Tap Question ...

I have a Fender cab (4ohm), and am wondering if I can safely use a splitter from the head (Orange Tiny Terror) 2 / 8ohm taps into a single cable and to the cab?
I'd like to keep from rewiring the cab to 16/series, and I'd also like to avoid mismatching the load if possible.
Does anyone have an educated opinion on this subject?

Mismatching your amp's 8 ohm output to a 4 ohm speaker load shouldn't be a problem. Most tube amps can handle a 2:1 mismatch either way, and the safest direction for a mismatch is to go lower with the speaker load.
As far a "Y'ing" your amp's speaker outputs into a single cab input..............to me, that's dicey. (gurus feel free to weigh in here).
Just plug the cab into your amp. You should be good to go - simplest solution and it's safe.

Thanks for your input.
I'm just sketchy on the small transformers in the amp. I'm running it mismatched, to the 4ohm now, but if the Y cable is cool to use, I'd rather match the load.

I think it's very unlikely that using a Y-cable would do anything useful - the two jacks in the amp are probably wired in parallel, so connecting both to the cab is exactly the same as connecting one.
A friend of mine will be getting a Tiny Terror in the next few days, I'll see if I can check.
How does the half-power switch work, BTW? Does it turn off one power tube and run the other single-ended? Or does it run the tubes as triodes? Or some other scheme...?
Mismatching downwards to 4 ohms should be safe normally, but I'm not 100% sure that it will be very good for the tube(s) if you're running at half power, depending on how that's done. 16 would probably be safer.

John.
I haven't done much with the half power switch. I just picked this up from a local bud in the emporium. I'll check it out and report back.
Thanks by the way.

The half power switch changes taps on the PT to turn the B+ voltage down, IIRC. Someone posted the schematic on Ampage.
