This may sound like a strange request, but hear me out.
I am looking for recomendations for a "guitar tracks only" protools setup.
I currently have a MACg4 and Digi002R. My amps are a Bogner Extacy and a PodXT. I am particularly fond of the guitar tones on the following albums:
Jellyfish: Spilt milk
Marvelous 3: Hey album
Marvelous 3: ReadySexGo
Owsley: The Hard Way
Dishwalla: Pet your friends
Remy Zero: Villa Elaine
I am looking for any recomendations for gear that will help in my "guitar tracks only" setup.
My goal is to record my own guitar tracks at home and bring them in to the protools hd studio that we have access to.
Thanks for any help you can provide
Dave

I do the majority of my electric tracks at home for my own projects and for other clients. They are recorded on my external drive and I take them to the bigger studio I record at.
I use Cubase SL3 and an IMac G5. The program you use is not really going to make that big of a difference in sound. It's more about having good mics, mic pres, compressors and the know how to record a good guitar sound. Many guitar sounds that you hear are recorded with multiple amps and mics. You can still get really great tones with a simple setup you just have to be good at playing and recording.

It's not absolutely necessary to use Pro Tools at your home studio. Just save your tracks as WAV files and import them at the studio and you're done. I use this all in one package http://store.cakewalk.com/b2cus/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=10-SPS65.00-20C

I think he's set on Protools right now w/ his 002 . . .
I like my Great River pre for electric stuff, definately "that" sound. Also check out the Chandler Germanium pre, I've heard nothing but great things about them for electric stuff.
Get a Royer 121 or 122 ribbon mic. Incrediblely accurate tone from this mic. If you've got a good sounding amp, it'll capture it! Set up a couple of feet of the cab, blend with a 57 that's tight to the grill . . .perfect.
Compression is mixed back for electrics. A Distressor probably couldn't hurt :)
Pick up a high quality A/D like an Apogee or Lavry for the final touches. . .

The wisdom in this statement is amazing... Seriously, I'm not kidding.

I'm not quite sure what you're looking for. You have great gear, perhaps what you need is time, or to improve your recording space or monitors. Or a host of other things. But clearly you can get great results without making any further investment.

I'm confused on what you are looking for. You asked what Pro Tools set up you should get, but you already have a good Pro Tools system. Your Digi 002R and PT LE will be able to everything you need and more.
The only thing I would suggest is a nice preamp, and 1 or 2 nice mics. After that, the only other thing is practice!
