Voici le pédalboard de Doyle Bramhall II lors du festival Crossroads le 28 Juillet 2007 à Chicago. (screenshot venant du dvd)

Is that a Microvibe I'm actually seeing on his new board?!! I just can't believe he would be using one of these instead of, say, a Megavibe or an Ultravibe. I have a Microvibe and to be totally honest, I can't goose it with much more than the very slightest and smoothest of overdrives (like, for example, a Sparkle Drive on half) without the Microvibe getting overloaded. I would have thought that he would never put up with that type of thing. Also, can someone tell me whether he uses a BC108 or NKT275 Sunface?

By the way, My favorite Doyle Bramhall ll clip from U-tube is this one.

I love his tone on this one. I really don't know for sure if he's using a Fuzz Face-type of pedal or merely goosing the crap out of a smaller amp. Whatever the case, the tone is full-on mojo. Big time.

If you pump 12 volts into the microvibe and take out that stupid bright cap, i actually like it better than some of the more expensive vibes.

for that clip he's not using a pedal. Just that giant jazz box and probably a small combo. Maybe Fender.

And he uses NKT275 sunface

that sunface is with the "Doyle Mod". take that red cap out and replace it with a nice Panasonic 0.1 mfd (according to Analogman). It gets musshy with chords but really thickens the leads out . When you roll it off it sounds fantastic too.

Does anyone know if Doyle uses a battery or a power supply for his Sunface? For that matter, what do you guys who use Sunfaces do? I'm thinking about the NKT Sunface, but am a board whore for most gigs because I need to play many different styles. Running on battery power would just give me more things to worry about - unplugging the fuzz (or switching the battery off), carrying extra quality batteries, etc.

Sorry if I highjacked the thread....

it's cool. Doyle uses a powersupply. He may be using the sag option on the PPII.

http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=S0PuIsK2ySk&feature=related i just want to post this video again!!! LIsten to how punchy his bridge pickup is the note seperation even when doing chords is unbelievable!!!

Any explanation for this?? I know that red strat has Van Zandt Vintage PU's... Probably with the tone control rolled back.. What do you think?

dewman
04-01-2008, 08:27 PM
I caught Doyle on a video live once rolling back the treble on his guitar to zero when using the sunface and it gets a really cool tone that I didnt expect. not dark at all but something completely different, bright too. crazy. its fun, give it a try (make sure your amp is crankin though..

I want a strat that sounds like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vFBG5OIh5A

Doyle must play his amps loud as hell since he has a light touch with his picking hand. Clearly his fretting had is doing the lionshare of work.

The Sunlion I have has an on/off switch for the battery, so I can just disconnect the battery if I wanted. But since it is the first pedal in my chain I just unplug it. But it is not a battery eater at all. I've had it for a couple years now and have replaced the battery maybe 1/2 dozen times -and I forget to unplug it sometimes too.

so does anyone know what Doyle uses for pickups in his strats?

gregory49
04-03-2008, 04:06 PM
Red Strat has Van Zandt's true vintage i think. '64 strat has originals (duh!):D . I think the sparkle purple one has fat 50s in it to be honest.. either that or texas specials... it was a lefty custom shop model so. and the pickups "look" stock... who knows.

Regarding his touch I've seen him dig in alot espechially when he starts using his index finger for those giant albert king bends...

I prefer his Superbass tone.. by a mile! :D i don't want to get in another SS Vs. Tube debate but I can hear the response difference the yamaha sounds much more spongy like a sick mesa/boogie , where the SB is tight and has those huge glassy Low notes..

That's the amp he got before he recorded Welcome-I noticed how much his tone improved on that cd. Of course, I'm assuming it has to be cranked so my 800 is gonna hafta do.:RoCkIn

That's pretty cool! Is that a 5E3, or something a little smaller? I wonder if it's a Fender, or a modern reproduction.

It seems like at one time there was a better quality version of this on YouTube. I wish I could find it, or better yet, get a good DVD of the ACL performance.

What fuzz is Doyle using in the "lesson" videos on youtube? Is it the NKT Sunface? There's only one birds eye view shot of his board but his legs are obscuring the right part of the board...

gregory49
04-06-2008, 07:21 PM
yeahp thats the sunface. that was his first touring board with clapton there are only two dirt pedals on there an one clean boost as far as i know , thats the sunface, Cornish SS2 or the RC booster so its one of those your hearing.

It's weird that on this performance he's using a modeling amp (Yamaha). I would never have guessed it until someone showed me. He may be blending it with a tube amp, but I have no proof of that.
I did a thread on here about it.

It sounds great though. I assume that the fuzz is a Sunface, but I don't know if he had one at this point.

I suppose at full fuzz it would be too 'wooly'.It depends on the amp though, and the volume control.A bright Fender would probably be ok compared to a Superbass.Mine work like that. His sound at the moment seems more 'fizzy' than before(circa great wall gig).I wonder if he has changed fuzz units. It sounds almost silicon in places nowadays.

He's just released 'Oh Death' on a compilation called 'A Brief History Of The Blues'. Erykah Badu is guesting one. Sounds amazing - just what the Blues needs at the minute.
You can download the track from most mp3 stores, or purchase the album.
Hopefully this track is what his album is going to sound like - if it is, then its going to win a Grammy.

Thanks for that,I'll download it.From what I've heard of his new stuff here and there he seems to have found a definitive niche between old and new blues. He sounds like a modern Lightnin Hopkins, bridging that gap between country blues and rock blues. All done with great songs and great tone.

On Sunday he called me and told me he mostly uses a '63 Strat with very mild original pickups. But he is going to aim for more gain now, and may use some hotter pickups and a hotter amp than his old Plexi. He's also trying a new fuzz from us with higher gain than the NKTs he has been using. It will be interesting to see what he comes up with!

eric-d
10-23-2008, 10:05 AM
I think he mainly uses the fuzz, ldo or rc seperately. He might stack on occasion - but by listening to his live stuff - he sounds like a one gain pedal at a time kind of guy. By most of the pics I've seen of his LDO - it's in the up position.

Anyone know how Doyle uses his Landgraff DO,whether he stacks it with the RC Booster,or Sunface? Also is the toggle set top,mid or bottom?

Some videos of Doyle playing with Susan Tedeschi back in 2006. Some really tasty stuff http://new.music.yahoo.com/videos/SusanTedeschi/Sweet-Forgiveness--33561463

Also you can preview her new album here, Doyle co wrote, plays and sings on the track Talking About as well as playing on 2 other tracks.http://www.vervemusicgroup.com/artist/default.aspx?aid=6598

Hi

Have a couple of questions - don't use pedals much myself so was just wondering what Doyle is using in these clips

First one from a recent show in London - is that a tremolo pedal he's playing through from around 0.35 seconds in to the video?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-x0tAVKEs20

Next one - what does he kick in for the chorus at around 0.48 seconds?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-Hiy6l3N9I

Any help appreciated - thanks!!
