yeah another thread about Doyle, you'll have to forgive me, anyway ... since my eyes and pedal identification knowledge arn't that great, anyone know whats on doyles board in that picture thats floating around.. and detail if thats possible i mean i pick out the obvious line 6 modelers and what not. Some Detail would be great to. How about that giant thing next to his wah? and in between the echodrive and TU-2? thanks.

I can see a Cornish on there I think. The pedals next to the TU2 look like Black Box stuff(maybe a Quicksilver and an Oxygen?) There's a Sunface on there somewhere too.
Also I think I see a switcher(Lehle?)

okay now we have a reference anyway, how about that thing next to the wah that just looks like a block? and whats the oxygen?

The thing next to the Wah is a Goodrich Volume pedal

yeah.. a Landgraff - it's not on that board. His new Pedal Board for this year is smaller.... It's a 1/4 to 1/3 the size of the one pictured... I'll have to dig up my copy..

Anyone know when a new solo cd might be coming? I loved Welcome-he needs to get back in the studio before he loses whatever magic he had writing those songs-way better than his earlier two.

I like(d) his older board more, only if it had the LDO on it... It would then be the ultimate board.

yeah, I've got a Quicksilver. It's a great delay. Sounds really analog, but, is digital. Two speeds, fx loop, modulation, what else could you want? no tap temp though.

OK this may sound like a stupid question, but where is the guitar input and amp output?
Doyle is a lefty, so would'nt he probably want to have the guitar coming into the left side of the pedalboard and the amp out to the right just for ergonomics? From the second picture it looks like all of the fuzz, vibe, and wah are located to the right of the pedalboard which would probably imply that the guitar input is on the right. Right?
Also where is the power supply located?
rockster12
03-27-2007, 01:32 PM
It looks as though alot of the stuff in setting on blocks to raise and some stuff is setting on actual components. The Tonebone appears to be on the power supply and the tuner is sitting on what looks to be possibly a buffer with a ground lift or something. It also looks as if they added a power supply jack to the sunface.

Thanks for posting this eric-d! I'm a huge Doyle II fan. He was here with Clapton 2 nights ago and I missed it. :messedup I was not a happy camper. It sold out almost instantly and I couldn't get tickets. Oh well...
I see he is still using the Line 6 delay. You know for the bad rap that this pedal gets it is still used by some major players. Nashville session ace Brent Mason uses the Line 6 DL4, and he's playing on major label recordings almost daily. I still prefer my Boss DD-20 though. ;)

Doyle is a badass. His board is great, I wish that I knew what went into what on his board. This trial and error approach works for some things but others aren't quite there yet. Germino Club 40- Analogman SUnface- then RC Booster and Eternity followed by Deja vibe and DL4 delay seem to be the best for me to cop his tone. RC is on with the Eternity, and for cleans. Sunface is on alone, or alternatively sunface into a ZVex box of rock smooths it out like DOyle's recordings. He has more snap to his tone, which may be the thick gauge strings and solid state rectifier on his super bass plus some EQ differences, but I am sooo close...I just wish I knew more about his rig, especially speakers- which is the key to a lot of his tone-and Hendrix's too for that matter.

Now. If we could just figure out the signal path...
dewman
04-20-2007, 10:50 PM
looks like I can see a partial chain emerging- and it is interesting- octavian into the sundface into the wah- wah into that orange thingy switchameroo
and into the langraff and then the RC booster
some other observations- langraff settings are low; vibe intensity is low, presumably to work with the fuzzes; RC booster looks like it is set for slightly over unity boost, with gain and volume up to 11 and the treble and bass dialed back a hair ; I cant make out if the deja vibe volume is set to the max or is set to 11 because of the glare; sunface is set to just below all out fuzz and the volume is close to unity- at that setting there will be some low end but nothing crazy muddy-he could have the trim pots also altered to set the clean up point...I cant tell where hee plugs in, maybe on the side.
I have to say- using a mixing board type flight case for a pedalboard is the shizzle. I found one recently used for 60$ that is covered in this stuff that loves velcro. the bottom is flat and the top foam padded, so you can velcro your pedals and then drop the top down for carrying, and take it off and it becomes your board. Very cool and the pedals dont go anywhere nor rattle around. Everything is secure.

Notice also the EBS Dynaverb. I have been touting that for years now. Pretty amazing, and VERY flexible. It doesn't have a "spring" mode, but I A/B'ed with my spring on my HR DeVille, and to my ears, it sounds BETTER and like a spring on some settings.
Nice to control tone of the verb also!

anyone figure out the remainder of the signal path on his board yet? Also, anyone know how hot his amp is running? with these settings I imagine he output from the signal path isnt huge. I get that kick ass bass from my unface only wen it is around 2 oclock and Doyle's running it a ot lower. I am wondering how many things are stacked. My guess i quite a bit are stacked at once given the low volume levels. Now of course this doesnt mean squat unless these are actually his real volme/tone settings!!

Dejavibe is a univibe copy:
swirling phase flanging throbbing, and a vibrato side too
Rotosphere is supposed to be a leslie cabinet sound, rotating, chorus-like effect at high speeds.

both are very cool effects wen added as a little spice ad not as a main ingredient...Doyle sprinkles them all over "Welcome..." like a great cook.

From looking at Doyle's older boards and my experience I suspect it to run like this:
Fulltone Deja Vibe (latest generation in small housing; volume on 10, intensity now is pretty low, but DBII usually has it on 5)
Chicago Iron Octavian
AnalogMan SunFace NKT275 with added power supply jack
Vox Wah Wah with added power supply jack
Paul Garrison interface box with mute switch and probably Paul's custom buffer (orange burst small Hammond box with a switch and one green and two white LEDs)
Landgraff Dynamic Overdrive (more or less a TS-808 Clone)
Xotic RC BoosterFrom here I guess the signal goes to the little black loop selector, which might take the Radial Tone Bone overdrive and the Moollon Tremolo in or out of the chain . The last pedals are:
Line 6 DL-4 Delay Modeller (set to Tape Delay)
EBS DynaVerb
Hughes & Kettner Tube Rotosphere (could also sit more conventionally in front of the DL-4), but DBII seems to have used it last in the chain often, just like a real LeslieThe plain Hammond box in upper left corner might be just used for input and output jacks, which could sit on the left hand side of it but I cannot see any polugs coming in, so this is highly speculative.
The position of the Radial ToneBone JX2, the Moollon Tremolo is not obvious to me, but maybe they really sit in a switchable loop.
The Boss TU-2 looks to be outside of the signal chain having only a plug into its Input, but I have no idea from where it gets fed.
From the board Doyle goes into the lower left input of channel I on his '67 SuperBass. On the first tour in Clapton's band he used an Ultimate Attenuator and 1936 cabs with replaced speakers and RI pinstripe grillcloth, but in 2006/7 he had a Savage Bluesbreaker clone and a RI tweed Bassman on stage. With Smokestack and most of the times with The Arc Angels you hear the SuperBass through a late '60ies Marshall 4 x 12" cab (either 1960 or 1982).
Ted Witcher:
I have never heard of Paul Garrison before. Does he have a website? As you know him, would you mind verifiying my above speculation by asking him?
What do you guys think?
BTW:
The latest pics of Doyle playing at Antone's this year showed him using a different set-up: Cry Baby modded to old Vox specs -> Ernie Ball volume pedal (tuner out to Boss TU-2) -> Boss Blues Driver (probably modded by Keely) -> Durham Sex Drive -> Durham Mucho Boosto -> Boss Tremolo -> Line 6 DL-4 -> Hughes & Kettner Rotosphere
With the Arc Angels he had a Prescription Electronics COB (clean upper octave) and an AnalogMan modded TS-9 before the Boss Tremolo, but did not use the Blues Driver.
I am afraid the major difference between Doyle's and our music lies not in the gear, but it is fun to check it out anyway.

I think you are referring to Snowy White (the guy with the Goldtop Les Paul).
On the "In The Flesh" DVD he was using the Goldtop and a PRS or some sort into VOX AC30's. I could not make out any effects by sight, but you can hear him use a Digitech Whammy Pedal on "Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun."

Does anyone have any pics of his amp rig from the first Clapton tour? I want to see those redone 1936 cabs.
Go to www.mylivingtree.com/DoyleBramhall2/ (http://www.thegearpage.net/board/www.mylivingtree.com/DoyleBramhall2/) and check out the pics in Doyle's gear. There you find the photo that was published in TQR. I saw Doyle with those two regrilled cabs, the '67 SuperBass, a bf Showman (as backup, I guess) and a late 50ies GA-40 (for slide) here in Munich on the 2004 Clapton tour.
The RI pinstripe is tighter then the standard black grillcloth and dampens some highs, much like basketweave on the old cabs. With new speakers such as the vintage 30s and the 80Ws that are said to be in those cabs this helps to get rid of some harshness.
I did not look well enough at the tone bone pedal, and no surprise, it is not one of the overdrives they build. I played both and found them not impressive at all. The ToneBone takes the place of the Lehle 1@3 switcher from the door sized board. So the tuner is most likely fed from there.

I just watched In the Flesh yesterday for the first time and was surprised to see Doyle there as the surrogate Gilmour.
Great sounds and very-SRV but him and Snowy couldn't be more differently stylistically surely. Snowy is so understated and Doyle goes for the flashy SRV/Hendrix getup with the chain and the velvet shirts...it's interesting. Andy looks like he belongs with Clapton.

There didn't seem to be a lot of coordination between the three of them w/r/t stage wardrobe, but that's cool. Doyle looks good, but that chain is pretty big, lol. Andy looks like a goof -- is that David Byrne's old suit? -- and Snowy looks like he just rolled out to the gig with what he had on. Love Snowy's playing on it, though, and Doyle's, too... he manages to make his SRV/Texas blues approach fit within the British prog sound and still quote enough of Gilmour to make it all work. His "Shine On," "Another Brick," and "Time" solos are all excellent.
Hated the trading solos on "Comfortably Numb," however... they should have traded nights, not bars.

Gregory:
I saw the photos of Doyle playing at Antone's in late May at www.doylebramhallii.com (http://www.doylebramhallii.com), When I just checked their site, the photo section did not work as it is under reconstruction.
It will probably be back soon, so look there from time to time.
It seems to me that Doyle enjoys varying his set-up a bit from time to time. Seem he sounds great always, whatever wahs (Fulltone, Cry Baby, Vox), boosters (AC, SexDrive) and overdrives (modded TS-9, Landgraff, BluesDriver, Mucho Boosto), octavers (Roger Mayer, Chicago Iron, PE) and fuzzes (old Fuzz Face, Hot Tubes,Sunface NKT, ...) he uses. He seems to stay with the variations of the Fulltone Deja Vibe, the H&K Tube Rotosphere and the Line6 DL-4, though.

Ted, Did you hear back from Paul?
His booster after the wah is probably just to buffer its output before the Landgraff to not degrade the signal. Dave Fox makes a buffer amp you can build into your Wah. It helps very much if you use a Wah before a Fuzz.

eric do you know if Doyle is using that same board you had posted on page 1 or 2?

Though my name is not Eric: Doyle's boards changed quite a bit over the past years, so the Garrison board is surely not the one he used on his albums.
From looking at the Garrison board a few more times and reflecting on how the cables seem to run and what would be just practical, I believe the signal chain to run like this:
plain Hammond box in upper left corner: guitar in -> out across the board to ...
Fulltone Deja Vibe (latest generation in small housing; volume on 10, intensity now is pretty low, but DBII usually has it on 5-7)
Chicago Iron Octavian
AnalogMan SunFace NKT275 with added power supply jack
Vox Wah Wah with added power supply jack
Paul Garrison buffer amp with true by-pass on/off switch (orange burst small Hammond box)
Landgraff Dynamic Overdrive (mini toggle is in middle position, which is the non-clipping boost mode, settings are just as on the Analogman modded TS-9 he used before)
Xotic RC Booster
True Bypass Switch/single loop selector (small black box) that takes the Hughes & Kettner Tube Rotosphere out of the signal chain, as it does not have true by-pass and is only selectively activated
Moollon Tremolo
Line 6 DL-4 Delay Modeller (set to Tape Delay; is not true by-pass, but being used in most every song there is no need to use a true by-pass looper for it)
EBS DynaVerb
Radial ToneBone JX2, with the Boss TU-2 connecting to its tuner out and the Boost-switch set down (non-boost), so that it the right hand footswitch mutes the signal for tuning, from there out to the two amps (most likely a SuperBass or the Savage Bluesbreaker and either a tweed Bassman or a GA-40 for slide)It gives the impression that the use of an existing board led to a few compromises regarding the placement of the pedals and the resulting cable dress.
Paul Garrison's custom power supply delivers 12VAC for the Rotosphere and probably for the DL-4 as well as 9VDC for the rest of the pedals. As the Octavian and the Sunface have positive grounds it must include isolated outputs, just as a Voodo Labs pedal Power or similar units. The Hammond 1590BB, on which the TU-2 sits, offers three mini switches for ground lift, changing the polarity 180 degrees and to activate an isolation transformer, features also found on the JX-2 switcher for the amps.
My impression is, Doyle stays true to his longtime preference for the Hendrix-pedals, some additional boost/mild overdrive, Leslie, tremolo, delay and reverb, covering the classic vintage sounds. He varied the chain a few times over the years, replaced some pedals by better boutique versions and improved the power supply over his early daisy-chain/battery set-ups, but that's about it. This can be copied by everyone, but very unfortunately the true difference lies in the man using all that stuff.

great synopsis BluzMike...awesome FBI-like analysis! I've replicated a lot of this recently and my rig has become very Doyle like- one key is the RC Booster, which sounds best on all the time with this rig and apparent tone suck.
I got guitar>deja vibe>fulltone Clyde deluxe wah w/ foxrox kit>Sunface>Eternity>Box of Rock>RC Booster>DL4 delay>Rotosphere>Club 40 amp>4x12 cab w/ celestions...its gettin there...

The little black switcher in the upper left of the board is a Keeley Looper.
Its two LEDs show if the pedal in its loop is 'true-bypass-ed' or active.

Nope, Charlie used one of those(still does actually) I saw the Arc Angels on this tour and Doyles Rig was the shizznit! 2 blackface twins each with it's own echoplex! His pedalboard looked like it came off the side of a barn, usual wha pedal(dunlap I think) TS-9, old round fuzzface pedal, roger mayer spaceship octavia, ross flanger pedal for a leslie sound, old univibe can't remember what else didn't have my camera phone with me to take a pic, oh wait there were no camera phones:-) He had some really cool new at the time fender strats, one purple one which I've never seen him with again(purple sparkle I think) No one new who they were, no one cared I was in the front row and they killed!! It was also a stark contrast, his "medevil by standards" rig and Charlies Demeter amp into Bradshaw rack loaded with TC 2290 and a bunch of other stuff, very very cool, I feel very lucky I gotr to see them back then and have been a Doyle fan from day one!!

When I saw him on the Jellycream tour his setup was this.....Strat>ADA Flanger>PE Experience>Crybaby wah>TS9>Fuzzface>Roger Mayer Octavia>Univox Univibe>Ross Flanger>Yamaha modeling head w/4x12 Marshall cab. good question- I asked this once and no one knew at the time. He had wo superbasses once, around the time of the tonequest article, and one was attenuated with the ultimate atttenuator. I thought maybe had had one for more overdriven tones and the other cleanish- but then he pops up using only one head, making me think that he's using more dirt pedals and keeping the amp cleanish. Anyone know??

09-12-2007, 11:11 PM
I heard that it was from someone a while ago but could be BS. I am guessing it probably is though given that the Germino Headroom 100 superbass spec version I played last year w/ solid state rectification was absolutely dead on Doyle with a heritage G12H loaded cab and a fuzz face (sunface) going into it. That mutha was loud when on noon on the dial, but that is where that incredible low end kicks in and the twang starts to round out into really cool tones. I had a fralin loaded strat fronting it and it sounded amazing. Made even a hacker like me sound pretty good!
I've been playing around with pickups and have found that with my rig Fat50s seem to give me the best Doyle tones w/ the Germino Club 40 and a sunface. fralin Blues were to mushy or dark and vintage hots didnt have that twang like DBII can conjur up, so for now I think I like the Fat 50s for that tone. Anyone else have any combinations in their gear that conjur up DBII wannabe tones??

I'm pretty sure the story goes he got the super bass and the '64 at Norm's back in 2000. Said he plugged into the two and it was the tone he had been searching for - for years. so I'm assuming that the SB is stock.

Anyone know what Doyle's rig has been for those three man blues sessions and funk sessions (like the Waterloo records in store appearance on You tube where they played Sly and the Family Stone's 'Let Me Have it All'). He's done something similar on this year's Crossroads concert. Is he using two tweed deluxes or old tweed gibsons? He plays a semi hollowbody, sounds like with flatwounds perhaps since it gives that old lap steel tone...anyone know what that rig consists of?

I'm listening to the Beacon, NY show.
I usually don't care for DB, but he played well. That COB Octave/Fuzz sounded great. The phaser not bad, but far removed from any Univibe.
any links to the exp hendrix show with doyle playing?

I had dinner with him last night and brought 4 pedals to his Hendrix show in CT. (also 4 for KWS and about 10 T shirts for the guys!).
Doyle told me he uses his Sunface on about everything, but did not bring it out as it's on his main board. Here was his board last night, Eric Gales' is below:
http://www.analogman.com/graphics/kws/hendrix2007/doyleericboards.jpg
He may replace the line6 with our AR20DL-XL analog delay for tonights show (KWS did!) and maybe the TS9 -> KoT.
Doyle also had some fun playing Chris Layton's drums

Doyle gave me two ideas for cool new pedals I will be working on too. A fabulous guitarist and super cool guy.
Last night the Experience Hendrix show was INSANE.... Hubert Sumlin,
Buddy Guy, Robbie Krieger, Mick Taylor, Mitch Mitchell and Billy Cox,
Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon, Robert Randolph,
Kenny Wayne Shepher, Doyle Bramhall II,
Eric Gales, Kenny Olson, Andy Aledort... amazing lineup.
If you have a chance to see one of these shows, GO!!!!!! A once in a lifetime concert.

What kind of amp is Eric Gales using?
You need to hook him up with some pedals. Imo he's by far the most talented of that lineup.

Agreed. I and Carl have started a few however the requisite dickhead usually comes along and offers irrelevancy,i.e. substance abuse.
Let's start one and lay out in the first thread and get it out of the way that, yes he has had substance abuse issues that have stalled his career. Then we can focus on his phrasing, soul, and instantly recognizable sound.

Eric is awesome. Most of the guys were using Marshall half stacks (rentals from SIR in NYC). Doyle's was a JCM45 MK-II reissue.
I talked to Eric and he said will be calling me for some new pedals soon.
You can hear Eric and Doyle and everyone on

go down to Oct 21st the Beacon Theater show is up.
I THINK Doyle is using my Peppermint fuzz at 40:00 but have not found out for sure yet. Whatever it is, it's a cool sound!

Hey Mike, That's cool news about Eric being interested in your pedals. IMO a couple of his floor based effects could use the improvement. Still a great player though.

Get the new Menatone KOTB. As far as amps I would go with a Metroamp.

I think the Germino Could do it with ease. Those Videos on Gregs Site are nothing short of amazing. Espechially the monterey. But i would go with the Savage considering it is what Doyle was using. If you don't need the combo, Like me, I'm going for the metro superbass when i get the coin.

can someone tell me where to find the lyrics of "oh death"?
i want to play it with my band but i can't understand everything.
I watched the documentary "Before The Music Dies" and there is some good Doyle interviews and playing to check out. What was not clear in the interview, it sounded like Doyle does not have a current record contract. If that is the case I'm very disappointed I have been waiting for a new release.....anyone know different?

"Oh Death" as it is commonly referred to, is actually a song called "Soon One Mornin".
It is an old spiritual. You can definetely hear the black-gospel influence melding with the roots of the blues. Really cool stuff
Here are the lyrics:
Soon one morning
Death comes a-creeping in the room
Soon one morning
Death comes a-creeping in the room
Soon one morning
Death comes a-creeping in the room
Oh my Lord, oh my Lord what shall I do
You may call your father
Your father will be no use
Call your father
Your father will be no use
Call your father
Your father will be no use
Oh my Lord, oh my Lord what shall I do
You had better hush, hush, hush
Somebody's calling by name
Hush
Somebody's calling by name
Hush
Oh my Lord, oh my Lord what shall I do
TimH- every plexi has the bass circuit, it doesn't have to be a superbass

Hrmm...I thought the bass circut was the circuit for the Superbass amps and the standard circuit was for the Superleads. My bad if that's incorrect.
gregory49

another note about oh death. is that Charley Patton originally sang the version entitled "oh death" search the lyrics for that one.
thanks for the heads up on that EXP.

The early Superbasses are basically a Superlead without the bright cap. You can easily convert a SL to SB specs its just a few component changes.

For those interested, there is great live performance of Doyle doing Green Light Girl. He is using a Les Paul Special with a P90, different vibe than other DVD performances of this song, worth checking out.

It's an R8. I don't know the year though. I might go see them on the 30th here in Houston. He won't be using the same board as he would with Clapton. So won't be able to tell if he switched out to the Micro Vibe. He will most likely be using the Les Paul an everything but Sent By Angels - which he'll use a Strat.
gregory49
12-28-2007, 04:04 PM
I thought so. Actually think we talking about this a few pages back but i didn't think the guitar was flamed out this much. When did they stop making the flame on the R8 wasn't it 04' or 05?
analogmike

Most of the flamed R8s were in 2001, some in 2002. Lots of nice lemondrop / butterscotch bursts then too.

I saw him with the Arc Angels last night in Austin, & he had the same board as the Galveston 7/2/2005 gig. Not sure who took this photo back then, but thanks!
http://www.mylivingtree.com/4866pic/711/CP339711.jpg
He stepped on the COB a couple of times, & it wasn't sounding so good (to him, too) & he made a disgusted face, & didn't use it after that. Funny thing is, there was no fuzz on the board, but at times it sounded like there was. He used the H&K for a couple of songs off the album, & used that funky looking Deja Vibe on only one song: a version of Jimi's "Angel"
For guitars, it was Strats most of the night. A brownish/reddish looking one with a darker colored headstock, & the purple metalflake one. He used TV a yellow Les Paul Jr. on one song & a black SG on another.
He had a small Vox head (like Charlie's, but with a smaller logo) sitting on top of a 4-12 cab. He also had a JTM combo next to the 4-12 cab. 2 of the speakers on the 4-12 cab were miked, but none on the combo. Maybe he head the JTM going to 1 half of the 4-12, & the Vox going to the other half.
Maybe Eric D. will be able to give more details if he goes to the Houston show tonight.

I got both of them when they first came out, & listened to them a lot over the years. I always prefered Jellycream for the cool vibe tones & overall songs. Then, just recently, I listened to both of them back to back, & heard the beauty of the Welcome album. The performances are a bit looser, but the guitar tones are much tighter. But, the songs on Jellycream are more of an adventure, taking you different places each time.
On Welcome, listen to the chewy uni-vibe tones on "I'm the One" Yeah!
Either way both albums are definitely recommended, as well as the first one. Great songs & production on that one, too.
