View Full Version : Boss Digital Reverb RV-5 vs Holy Grail reverb: opinions?

I picked up a used Boss RV-5 digital reverb pedal last night to go with my Bassman LTD I just bought. I brought it to practice but didnt really have time to futz with it too much. It seemed....just ok. Seemed to color the sound a bit too much to me. When i took out of the line my tone seemed to come back. (Kind of makes me wish the bassman had and effects loop).

Anyway, just wondering if anyone has much experience with these and how they might compare to a Holy Grail reverb pedal.

Personally...I couldn't stand the Holy Grail. Main thing was the effect itself. NO control over the reverb tail. I liked it for the first minute, and after that the tails bugged me.

On top of that, it is a large footprint, has to have its own power supply. amd very limited choice of sounds or type of reverb. I have heard of reliability issues also.

I know a lot of folks like them, and it may be if I heard how they use them I'd be impressed, but it sure wasn't for me.

The Trex (above, in previous post) would damn-sure be worth checking out. I ended up with an EBS Dynaverb which I am extremely happy with.
I since have also gotten the Marshall, which I think is pretty nice, and the Digiverb. Like them all, but the EBS is just quality...all the way.

Someone just recently posted about TC ELectronics coming out with some impressive looking reverb footpedals.

i used one for nearly 2 years and recently sold it off cheaply (mine actually got dented at that flimsy black part at the sides) ..... and traded it for an RV-5. i use it mostly for the Hall settings, but to me it just got too noisy when i turn the knob to full.
so basically i'm getting the rv-5 so that i'd be able to have more control over the wet/dry signal coming out of the pedal.

so yeah, i'm going like, the total opposite of your direction.

I imagine the T-Rex is going to be pretty good but I've never tried it. I just got a Line 6 Verbzilla in yesterday and happend to have a gig that night. I went a head and added it to the pedalboard for the gig and used it with my Diamond Memory Lane delay. It sound very good...... really lush and warm sounding. I'm still playing around with it some but I'm impressed so far.

Most people that use Boss reverbs go for the RV-3 or RV-2, though there are still far better ones out there.

I'll +1 the Verbzilla. It has some killer effects in there and gets high praise around here

i've had both a boss rv-3 and a holy grail. i now own a radical red reverberator which totally blows them out of the water....seriously no contest. the first note i hit with the reverberator, i knew i was gonna be happy with it. it's far more natural sounding (not that annoying digital sheen thing). it's quiet and true bypass. oh, and it's also got a level knob. this means that when using thick reverbs you don't get a volume loss. i'm happy!

I didnt know that the Holy Grail needed its own power supply. That pretty much leaves that out.

I just dont know how much I'll use a reverb to be honest. More testing with the RV-5 to make sure it will do the job.

the holy grail doesn't necessarily have to have it's own power supply. i used it with my dc brick with zero problems.

Reverb is SOO important get a listen to a Lexicon MPX1 and then see if you still like either of these. Also check out the new TC Nova reverb havent heard it yet but it must be on the list.

I used the verbzilla wed night and really liked it. I'm not sure which mode I like best, 63 spring or chamber. Chamber sounded more studio-lexiconish and sorta real and the 63 spring had a very believable fender verb vibe. I think this pedal is a keeper.

are you after a spring reverb sound or another type of reverb (halls, plates, etc). this could influence which pedal you're after alot

Probably spring. What I'd really like is the reverb that you hear in most Fender amps.

Played around with the RV-5 a bit more. Not very long. (I never have ANY time anymore). Got a couple good sounds out of it...but it does affect the tone a bit. Not sure if all external reverbs do that or not.

well for spring you might be better off with the holy grail after all. i'm not a big spring reverb fan so i really prefer the radical red. but on a budget, the holy grail spring sounds are pretty darn good. buy one at guitar center so you can try it out and return it if you're not impressed (or if you happened to get a noisy one).

The need for a power supply pretty much put the "ixsnay" on the Holy Grail. I already have to deal witha power supply for my Tonebone...dont want to deal with another one.

what type of pedal power are you using?
