I was wondering would I be better off buying one of these http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Epiphone-Dot-Electric-Guitar?sku=518250
and then installing some WCR Crossroads along with rs pots.

Or saving up for Gibson 335 (Keeping Stock), Im going for absolute tone and sacrificing some money for it.

Also would Gibson knobs and pickguards fit on the epiphone 335.

Any other 335 copies would be great also.

I love epi dot's but they are not a 335, and don't sound like one. They look alot like one and have a few of the great characteristics - great sustain and feedback at lower volumes, cool hollow sound but if you play them side by side you will see what I mean.

I'm pretty sure the Epi Dot comes stock with Gibson PAFs. If you buy one I'd just play it as is -- aside from doing a basic set-up.

You should consider buying a Heritage H-535 which is, in my opinion, far superior to an Epi, 335 and even the custom shop products.

I've played them side-by-side (all three) ... H-535 won hands down in every way.

I agree, it would be worth considering a Heritage or even a Tokai (Japan)they both look beatifully made guitars and are well regarded.

The type of guitar you're interested in is plywood (read laminate). The tone of some Gibby's is still amazing,as you can still get a 70's Gibson at a decent price for a good sounding instrument. If you're looking at a Memphis reissue 335,there are some that are quite sweet. If you don't have the jing or can't wait,a used Heritage 535 is a nice option,if you can live with the headstock...

I spent $500 for a newer Burny 335 copy with hard case, added $120 worth of SD Seth Lovers and have a pretty nice guitar. Looks right as well.

A while ago, one year maybe, I was hunting for a Gibby..seems like every one had some sort of factory problem. Just wasn't worth the money if you ask me.

Bad frets, tilted pups, orange peel. I was bummed because I wanted a new one really bad to replace the 87 I sold.

But...the Larry Carlton model, now thats a different story!

My point is, if there is one..I'll find one someday.
I love a good 335.

If I were going to buy an Epiphone I'd consider this one - the block inlays look great:

Spend ten minutes with a Korean made Hamer Echotone if money is a problem. I truly love mine, don't know if they are all this good...but this one is.

I have an Epi 335 that I ugraded the electronics to RS and put WCR pickups in, but it was an Elitist, which is somewhat higher quality than just the straight Epi Dot.

I have been very happy with mine and don't regret it at all. I got it as part of an unplanned trade, and still believe I definitely got the better of that deal, but if I were looking for another, I would assuredly get a Heritage. Best consistent quality overall.

My choices would pretty much go like this:
1. Heritage - KILLER guitars.
2. Michael Kelley Duece Phoenix - very good for the $
3. Hamer - as someone else mentioned, very nice.
4. Ibanez Art Core - look at all their models in this series, great values
& bringing up the read the Epi - just can't see buying one of these, ymmv.

+1

Is it big like a Dot Neck 335?

Heritage, no doubt. Save up and get one on the used market and in the end you'll have almost as much invested as you're upgraded Epi/Edwards or whatever. Great guitars, under rated and under valued in the market (for now!).

I'd easly choose an ibanez artcore (I got one), hamer echotone (I've heard rave reviews from a guy here on TGP), or one of the new peavey jazz boxes (peavey seems to be making solid instruments and amps lately) over a low end epiphone... but the epiphone will look the most like a real 335 if that's important.

Get a heritage 535. I found mine new for 950! Granted it was a great deal, but they are still really affordable and IMHO much better than a gibson 335.

John Ziegler, a very talented pro and GP member, seems to always be playing his Burny 335 copy, He has various samples and links posted in Gear Page archives. It is a 335 type guitar in a rock to fusion setting.

Meanwhile, I have a Yamaha SA-2200 that is a wonderful 335 type axe.

How's the neck profile on those?

Medium sized "C" shape. Not near as chunky as my Edwards LP. Lacquer finish and SD pickups. I could only get about an hour on it last night since my bride is so pissed off that I may have to sell off some other items. Oh well!

posted a wanted ad here on TGP. Some guy responded, he had bought the guitar new, never used it, still had the hang tags and everything. Sold it to me for 950, I was a happy camper!!

...yeah but resale is waaay different. It's not only an axe it's also an investment.

But if you buy used, at $950 to $1100 the Heritage is very nice and you will be able to resell for what you paid.

I'm suprized no ones mentioned the John Scofield model.
Ibanez makes some really great sig models, this and the Pat Metheny :AOK are built with awesome detail and sound fantastic.

I've owned quite a few 335s over the years - late 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and even an '03 historic. I really like them but it seems that they just don't suit me. Today I tried a Tokai 335 and it seemed as good as any of the Gibsons I've had - lighter than most, too!

I had a Japanese Elitist 335 too - great guitar that was almost the equal of the Historic. Better finished!

The Heritage website mentions the 535 and the 535 Classic. The only difference seems to be that the Classic has Duncan pickups ( I assume the Seth Lovers) and I guess the other model has the HRWs, right?

ES 137...I get compliments on it's sound every single time I play it.
