From my friend Leszek in Poland:
"I intend to turn this Workers Day (May 1, 2007) into the WORLD GUITAR DAY this year! :-)
and I see it's simple and real - as Jimi Hendrix said : "with the power of soul, anything is possible..." :
This year the Guitar UNION idea becomes wider and wider ...
I intend to arrange the internet TV live transmition to let Jimi's and guitar fans in the whole World to join us this year !!! - it's a brend new idea - but I have fans in some specific 'hubs' (Berlin , Munich, Polish Radio in New York, Brazil, and elsewhere) that want to celebrate The 1st of May - Guitar Day with us and some of these (and, hopefully, others) will host smaller local gatherings at the same time and will
webcast those events back to us in Wroclaw and we can show these live
(and possibly later in the event) to the crowd in Wroclaw via the
large screen monitors.
I want to find as many other ways as I can to involve more groups and
individuals. I have confirmation from Guitar Player Television for promotion the Idea !
....what about to join us in your City online at the 1st of May as well ????
Sweden join us 3 day ago http://www.surrealismmusic.bravehost.com/jimifestival.html (http://www.surrealismmusic.bravehost.com/jimifestival.html)
time for the USA ! :-)
If you know other guitarplayers or/and manager who are a guitar fan and an active man - send him this video link and the photo - he shoud "Feel the Blues" :-) and join the GUITAR UNION - it will work I'm shure.
Let me know your ideas to promote the Event in the States /?/
Blues regards

LISTEN LOUD !!! :-) to the ending - I'm sure it makes Jimi happy :-)"
Wish I had time to organize one here in Danbury but buried in work.
have fun!

Is there any doubt who was the most influential guitarist of the 20th century? :D

Man, that video was touching - several "Great Moments":
1. When all the electric instruments on the stage stopped playing and you could hear the hundreds of acoustic guitars in the crowd strumming the "HEY JOE" chord changes.
2. When the leader turned to the band to "come back in" and all the electric players, holding back, seemingly forever, let loose with a flurry of emotionally played Jimi-Riffs.
3. The "zoom-in" across the huge city square teeming with thousands of people to some cat, about 4-5 stories up, sitting outside his window ledge with his Strat playing along.
4. At the "big, rock-n-roll ending" when all the acoustic guitar players held their guitar bodies up up in the air to "kiss the sky".
That made my day Mike - thanks for sharing it with us!
Peace,
James

What a wonderful thing to do!Takes a lot of work to put an event like that together. In the US you would see pharmaceutical ads and Pepsi and Ford
banners everywhere.Good luck getting city hall to approve such a thing.I know I'm an old pessimist. Thanks Mike for passin' it along!:RoCkIn

Amazing, it would have been so cool to see what gear he would have using if he was still alive and playing today, In my guess, probebly simple like he had it and maybe even some acoustic guitar since he was delving into jazz towards the end of his life
Rock-On!!

It got trashed because Janie Hendrix wanted a cut of the profits. I don't know who is more greedy, the US Gov. or Janie Hendrix.

Yea I saw that, what's next Hendrix Heroine, Crack, Meth?
I bet once Experience Hendrix Ltd. gets word of this festival they'll want some compensation for a public performance of "Hey Joe".

Yeah that's true....there is a Hendrix vodka, but Janie Hendrix... whom by the way screwed Jimi's real brother, Leon out of his share of Daddy Al's will...is enraged over the vodka, as she states that it's an infringement on the Hendrix name, etc...
From what I've ready about this woman, hearing that the stamp didn't go through because of her wanting a cut of the proceeds doesn't surprise me in the least.

I was there - even on the main stage - in 2005 and it was unbelievable. That many guitars with the sound coming from every direction was like nothing else I've ever experienced. As to Rumblefish's quote about it being a lot of work, my hat is off to Leszek who pretty much does the entire thing solo and on a shoestring - there is no "office" or "staff" and the thing is huge (15,000+ beyond just the people playing) and that the city supports it the way they do (even the mayor playing on-stage) is like nothing I've ever seen in the states. A really positive event with a great vibe to it and really cool to see such a cross-section of people there - especially so many teenagers - lots of girls, too (in Europe it seems like the music fashions are towards electronica, faux hip-hop, etc. so nice to see younger kids getting into guitar).
There is a new english language myspace page up at http://www.myspace.com/thanksjimifest
Personal disclaimer is that I've done several tours with Leszek - who is a great player - you can hear a version of his "Thanks Jimi" instrumental that we recorded in Monterey last year on my myspace page:
