View Full Version : Reverb dwell - how to shorten?

I have a blackface style amp and while I love the basic tone, I find the reverb to be almost useless because the dwell time is so long. I have to keep the level control below 8:00 or the long dwell time becomes overbearing. Any suggestions?

Get a tank with a shorter delay.

I am curious about this as well. I feel the same as bob-i, as I am done with the 'verb by the time I get to 3 on the dial.
I know that the Fender Reverb units, and the Allen old flame use a pot to control the dwell.
Besides the option of using a shorter delay pan,...
Is there a simple way to use a just resistor and/or cap to slightly alter this level?
Help us out here folks.

I would think you could add a pot to attenuate the drive signal going into the drive tube's grid(s.) Or remove the cathode bypass cap on the same tube.

It's been a while since I did this, but in an AB763 circuit, follow pin 7 (pin 2 and 7 grids are jumpered) from the first 12AT7. It leads to a 1Meg resistor that goes to ground. You can adjust the value of that resistor or put a 1 meg linear pot in its place. You can always use one of the speaker outputs to mount the pot. So, the mod would be easily reversible and you won't add extra holes to the chassis. (is it a valuable amp? keep it valuable)

Going with a medium vs. long delay tank makes a huge difference. I made that swap in my outboard reverb unit, also in 3 fender BF amps so far. It was with the outboard unit -- despite having the dwell control -- that I realized I needed an alternative. Took a look at the tank in my Clark Tyger (came with a 3-knob reverb built in). It was a medium 3 spring, not the long 2 spring in my BF amps and outboard reverb. Ordered one, and it did the trick for me. Much more usable. Just sounds better to me. YMMV.
