View Full Version : Is my reverb tank broken?

I have a late '70s Music Man Amp, a 65 212 combo. When I bought it last fall, the reverb worked perfectly, typical lush Fender reverb.
Now, without any accident, that I know of, happening to the amp, the reverb is barely audible. The clean signal is fine but, even when I turn the reverb up to 10, there's only a faint echo -- there's some there, but nothing like it should be.

Based on that, is it possible that the reverb tank or some of its springs has failed or should I consider some other source for the problem? There's only one pre-amp tube on this amp and I think it's a phase inverter -- I don't think the pre-amp tube drives the reverb.

Thanks for any insights.

If that particular amp is in fact tube driven check the tube of course. Make sure of that if you are cloudy since it could possibly be the tube. Second (probably first) is to open up the reveb pan and make sure that the tiny little wires inside the pan didn't come desoldered. That happens fairly often. Also make sure the RCAs coming from the pan to the back of the amp are nice and snug.

I have seen more guys with busted reverb trace it back to those dinky wires inside the pan itself. If it isn't either of those then I am no more help.

I'm fairly certain it's not the tube since I'm pretty sure the one pre-amp tube is the phase inverter. Too bad, that would be an easy fix.

I'll check the wiring inside -- thanks for the suggestions.

set your multimeter to ohms, test the tip and barrel of your reverb pans rca connection one by one, megohms indicate a broken transformer or otherwise known as open circuit.

I thought Musicman amps used a solid state preamp and reverb?

Haven't been able to follow through yet -- in the middle of a move. I moved the amps first so I can could get some empty-house time with them, which is when I noticed the problem with the reverb.

Some of the early ones had a single 12AX7 as part of the preamp, this is one of them. I think the reverb is solid state though.

Hey Dude, Your amp uses a dual op amp for verb.(Different ones for 2x12 and 2x10) I have replaced several.
It is a solder in device but pretty simple. Its located on the PC board right on the other side of where the reverb pan rca plugs are connected. The op amps are cheap but beware of high voltages in any amp with trannies the size that one has.
