How about some suggestions of preamp tubes to try in my Voodoo Modded Mesa Dual Rec? I'm just trying to broaden my horizons...going for a high-gain, warm, fat sound with smooth highs. Had a Tung-Sol RI in V1, with a GT Mullard in V2. Voodoo put a EH in V1 and a GT Russian (I think) in V2. 9th gen Chinese from Dougs Tubes in V3 and V4. Ruby 6L6 output tubes. Anyone try the 5751 in a Dual Rec?

Seems like you've exhausted the possible, higher quality, new production 12AX7 options. A 5751 will give you slightly less overdrive (often a good thing) and likely sound smoother in V2. It would clean up the clean channel in V1. Definitely worth a try if you're "tube rolling".

A JAN GE 5751 would be a good one to try. About $20 and far superior to the new production junkers.

Although I never swapped preamp tubes in my recto, I did in my marshall. I really like the JAN GE 5751. It is smooth, but with plenty of character. I don't have the mesa anymore, but I thing the 5751 would be cool in it. Give it a try, I think you'll like it.

Cool, the 5751 does sound interesting enough to try. Thanks for the response both of y'all.

And Mike I've been reading your posts on tubes 'cause they're really interesting even when they're unrelated to anything I'm doing.

What about NOS preamp tubes? Is it worth the money for something like a Mesa, or are they more sensible in vintage/lower gain/less complex type circuits?

I have almost every new production 12AX7 and most old production(I dont use the term NOS since mine are used). I also own only modern type higher gain amps. After much swapping and testing none of them have new production tubes in them. For me that says it all. Bob

Do you guys think there would be any benefit to replacing the 9th generation Chinese 12AX7's I have in V3 and V4 with better tubes...either NOS or current production? Or are they too far down the tone chain for the benefits to be worth the money?

It depends. If one is the effects loop driver/recovery, in some amps that tube is always in play even when you don't use the loop.
