View Full Version : Should I do a fuzz and/or delay shootout?...

I've thought about this a bit, and think that I'd like to do one towards the end of the year, once I get most of the pedals that I'm waiting on to arrive. What do you guys think? Would you be interested? Here are the pedals I'd use in the fuzz shootout (assuming I've got them all by the time I'd like to do the shootout):

Analog.Man NKT-275 Sunface w/sundial
Analog.Man BC-108 Sunface w/sundial
Analog.Man Peppermint fuzz
BJF Pink Purple Fuzz
Bob Sweet fuzz (when they're released)
D*A*M 1966
D*A*M MK II Pro
D*A*M Ramhead
D*A*M Meathead Deluxe
Electroharmonix Vintage Big Muff (triangle knob, ram head) and reissue NYC
Landgraff Fuzzbomb (Assuming I'll be getting one)
Skreddy Mayo (w/ or w/o toggle switch)
Skreddy ? Lady
Skreddy Pink Flesh
Way Huge Swollen Pickle (assuming I can get one for a half decent price)
Toneczar Openhaus
Vox Tonebender
ZVex Fuzz Factory

Quite a few fuzz pedals, yes, but I plan on selling the ones that I don't "dig"

As for the delays, the list wouldn't be quite as big, but here they are:

Analog.Man delay
Atomic FX delay clone
BJF/MP Deep Blue Delay
Blackbox Quicksilver
Diamond Memory Lane
Eventide Time Factor
Fulltone Tube Tape Echo
Maneco Filter Eko II
Pigtronix Echolution
Toneczar Echoczar

They're my two favourite effects, so I thought that I'd do a shootout... I just wanted to see if you guys would be interested. I'd make clips of each pedal, and write a review for each one. I hope I'd be able to get most of the ones listed above that I don't already have by that time! Lets see what you guys think. Cheers.

Marko M.

P.S. If you aren't going to have anything positive to contribute to the thread, and are only here to make stupid comments, then don't. I ask you ahead of time to stay out if that's what your intentions are.

Um...Yeah. No need to ask permission. You've got the gear, and I'd love to hear it.

if you make clips, play a variety of different things in the clip, play the same routine for every pedal, and show the clean tone before you click on

:)

Why not do both, Marko?!

Hey I can help you out:) We're both in T.O. My comp or yours? Im just dying to take a run through all those pedals. It can be a joint effort. The shootout to end all shootouts!!!!!! Id do both if I were you. Im still waiting To learn the ins and outs of my Murf before I do a full in depth clip(s). I can't imagine how long it would take to setup and record all of those pedals!!!!!!!! Thats why you need a helping hand:crazyguy

Yeah, I'd be cool with that... Hey, ever wonder what two MuRF's would sound like together?! :D

Go for it, man. I would love to hear how all of these pedals compare to each other.

I thought you weren't set up to do clips?

Where'd you hear that? Perhaps in an OLD thread... I got an SM-57 2 weeks ago.... Unless you mean "set up" in the skills department? (which I'll admit, that I'm not... compared to most on here)

Must've been an old thread. Like older than 2 weeks?? :crazy Maybe you could make a clipstash like The Gainster.

I second the both.

what style would I have to play to demonstrate the fuzz and delay best? This would take a LONG time...

Just plug in and jam, improvise and play what you want.

Do you have a looper ? You could record a short piece, say 30 seconds, using some chords, riffs, lead work etc, and just loop it over and over. This would allow you to dial in sounds with the pedals, it's basically how I demo pedals and do a shoot out.

Cool!

Fuzz please. There is no best style to me, each has it's own deal. I would go clean rock to gain rock.

Abso-friggin-lutely, Marko! Both!

I'd say pick a few styles with fuzz. e.g. David Gilmour, then dial in each fuzz the best you can to match his sound. Then describe how each fuzz worked (feel, tone, etc). Then do the same for, say, Joe Walsh or Billy Corgan.

I'm not so interested in a delay shootout as I am quite satisfied with my DD-20 :RoCkIn

Great idea. I love listening to shoot outs. The only problems that inevitably come up are that the clips are limited by recording setup (much better to hear all of these in person, can we come over?), and that each pedal is not a static entity, in other words they are all quite tweak-able, and so we are only hearing a snapshot of the controls set at that particular time. And trust me when I say, I can twist knobs enough to make pretty much any pedal sound bad (though that also has to do with my playing :o ).

Anyway, yes. Go forth and shoot. :AOK

Just make sure you group them correctly. Fuzzes against fuzzes, muffs versus muffs, mkII's with mkII's etc.

Comparing a Sunface with a Muff isn't going to work. Totally different sound. :)

yep, i'm more interested in fuzz than delay. I feel like all you need is one good delay... but fuzzes are a different story. Go for it!

I'd get more satisfaction hearing an actual song, with chords and a melody or some such that used fuzz "A", than the same stock riff thru 20 fuzz's.
But that's just me...

Which is great, by the way.:BEER

I did a fuzz shootout on another forum, and I think that this:

play a variety of different things in the clip, play the same routine for every pedal, and show the clean tone before you click on

is very good advice really. These are just audio clips? Think quite a bit about mic placement and such to get the recorded clean sound close to what you're hearing in the room before you start in with the fuzz.

I used Soundclick to host my clips .. not as many fuzzes as you're planning though.

It was heaps of fun, by the way.

sounds cool, I just have to get about 5 or 6 other fuzz pedals now, and a few delays... I hope that the Echoczar is here by the end of the year though!... Expect to be seeing a few fuzz & delay pedals up in the emporium after this though!

I like it when guys record a dry guitar signal DI to a track, then reamps it through each pedal and records that. That way it takes out variables such as the player warms up, gets tired, gets excited about a tone and plays better, etc.

I vote for fuzz.

AMEN! That is the best idea. Re-amping isn't that difficult of a process either, and its actually a good way to step back and observe your gear/playing without your perception getting in the way.

You have a number of pedals I have longed to hear, many of which don't seem to have many users or any clips available. I would LOVE to hear clips!

By the way, you lack some of the amazing MJM Fuzz pedals! What's the deal!?! I swear by my MJM London (germ)! My 1966 is my other go to fuzz, but I see you have that one covered. And do you happen to have the new D*A*M Ram Head 2nd Edition?

markom89
04-16-2007, 06:45 PM
All the D*A*M pedals I'm buying in July... So I guess I'll be getting that one... I dunno if I can afford another fuzz... lol, but I'd like to get the MJM in there, and also a pro analog.
