Anything other than the Epiphone Allen Woody bass fit this description? I don't need a ton of low end, I actually like a more middy sound like some of Geddy Lee's stuff, Allen Woody in Gov't Mule and Timmy C in RATM.

I lucked into an older Japanese 335-ish Hollowbody bass by "Ventura" which is identical to Univoxes of the time. Great bass. Great fit and finish and amazing sound. It's the main bass we use in my band now. You can still get them for cheap online.

there's a very good interview with the late allen woody in vintage guitar. in the interview he talks alot about his basses and mandolins. he mentioned that he recorded with a vintage red gibson eb2 on some of the gov't mule albums.

A Gretsch Broadkaster bass would be another choice similar to a Woody, although definitely more expensive!

HEY PAT!!!!!

I have a 65 Hofner Club Bass.
With the front pick-up only it's big as hell, but the rear pick-up adds that midrange thingy real nice.

Here's an action shot of me with it:

Haven't played em, but you might look into some of the hollow and semi-hollow Waterstone basses. I'm liking the look of the Indra quite a bit... and the price is quite low.

i had an old eb2d that had that tone. lovely bass! you might want to try waterstone. they have semi-hollow 4 strings that fit the bill and the tom petersson sig in 34 and 32 scale.

How about www.jerryjonesguitars.com (http://www.jerryjonesguitars.com)

I have a short horn that bring two worlds together.
A hollowbody and good playability. My Hofner sounds great especially for recording but string spacing is very narrow. It did work OK for a guy in a band that was around in the 60's though.

If you could find one of these it would probably meet your requirements...http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t195/musicofanatic/PB230008.jpg

A Guild or DeArmond Starfire bass (30" scale, semi hollowbody - originally w/Hagstrom pickups) would probably fit your bill too - listen to Jack Casady w/Jefferson Airplane or Phil Lesh w/the Dead prior to 1985 for an idea of the sounds the Starfire bass can produce.
