View Full Version : Pedalboards for BASS?

Due to current company, I've been experimenting with effect pedals for guitar... and BASS!

On my bass pedalboard, I use a Line 6 DL4 for Chorus, a Red Witch Deluxe Moon Phaser, RAF Mirage Compressor, EH Nano BassBalls and a EH Nano Muff that I purchased after listening to Muse's new album!

Any one else from here have a BASS pedalboard?
Or am I just a "frustrated guitarist"?!?:o

never used a board per say, but used a maxon overdrive and sans amp bass driver with a rickenbacker 4001. the bass driver can make a rick sound HUGE:drool

i just recently comined my guitar and bass boards. this let me cut down the number of pedals, since they can share the same tuner, delay, eq (though different settings of course), tremolo, looper, etc.

the only bass specific pedals i've got now are the boss ceb-3 bass chorus and the x-driver bass overdrive/distortion. essentially i've got a homemade AB looper pedal so that i can keep the same chain, but swap my (barber DD -> boss ce-5) in and out for my (x-drive -> ceb-3) section.

I don't have a board yet, but this is the gear I'm using. Digitech Bass Synth Wah, EH Bass Balls, Moog Bass Murf, and Fulltone Bass Driver. I use them with a American Made Fender P-bass 62 Re-issue with a Mesa head Mesa 2x10 and Ashdown 15. It sounds pretty huge

I don't have a board yet, because so far I only have one pedal - a ProCo Juggernaut - for this band. I expect that will change though :).

The bass player in my main band (where I play guitar) has a pedalboard I built for her, with: Boss TU-2, Frantone The Sweet, Boss Bass Overdrive, Boss BF-2 Flanger, Boss Bass Chorus, and Dunlop Bass CryBaby (white one).

I really don't know why more bass players don't use effects, especially distortion...

Let me answer this. Most overdrives/distortions don't sound good with bass. Its very hard for a bass player to find the one they like. Plus there isn't a lot out there.

I became interested in the search for a bass distortion when I heard the opening of Alanis' cover of "Crazy". I tried quite a few and I think the ZVex Wooly Mammoth was the closest to that sound, but I thought it was a bit over distorting even at it's low settings... I finally bought a EH Nano Muff and I'm digging it! :RoCkIn

My bass board is:
Arion tuner
Crowther Prunes & Custard (love this sound!)
Big Cheese Clone (good OD for bass)
Ibanez DE-7 (for making noise)

Let me answer this. Most overdrives/distortions don't sound good with bass. Its very hard for a bass player to find the one they like. Plus there isn't a lot out there. Not that many guitar distortions sound very good for bass, it's true - although there are some. But there are quite a few dedicated bass overdrive/distortions now.

I've had good results with the EH Little Big Muff, Frantone The Sweet, and Boss Hyper Fuzz (all guitar pedals), and the Boss Bass Overdrive and ProCo Juggernaut (bass pedals). There are several other bass distortions I know of that I haven't tried yet but want to (Frantone Lo-Tone Classic Fuzz and Bassweet, and ZVex Woolly Mammoth especially), and there must be plenty more...

Some of the dedicated bass ones differ from guitar distortions in that they allow you to blend clean signal back with the distortion, so I wonder if the Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive might sound good for bass, if you want more of an 'overdrive' than a distortion or fuzz... (although FWIW I thought it was awful for guitar!)

I honestly think it's because most bass players aren't used to the sound of distortion and it's too much of a culture shock after years of using only clean sounds... but once you realize that it's meant to sound like that, you start to hear the musical possibilities. Guitarists may have felt the same in the 1960s :).

Bass players often chide guitarists for being too stuck in the past and seeming to be unwilling to play anything that was designed after about 1970, but I think it's maybe the other way round when it comes to sounds.

No offense intended! And yes, I've only just taken up playing bass again after a gap of about ten years, in which I became a much more tonally diverse guitarist... but that's the whole point, once I had a bass in my hands again the first thing I thought of was what cool non-standard sounds I could make with it ;).

actually there are quite a few out there. Bass Player magazine had a pedals issue last year that had a fairly substantial list... although not all were specifically bass overdrive/distortions, but most were.

as to sounding good or not, i guess that's subjective, but i'd have to agree that they generally don't sound very good. generally most effects don't sound all that great on bass, and using more than a couple (even if they're good) makes it all sound worse.

I'm not a fan of overdrive or distortion for bass really at all, but here's a pic of my pedal board:
The Digitech Bass Synth Wah has since been replaced with a MXR M188 Bass Auto-Q Wah.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a20/mikeamanda/PedalBoard.jpg

The Fat Boost (which came from our very own Scott Peterson) is used to just "level" out my basses. (some are hotter than others)
But lately I've been using it for a boost for some slap/solo stuff.
The upper left pedal is actually a prototype of the now production model Demeter Outboard EQ.

I've managed to find more bass fx, but I had to search for them. Yes they are out there, but not as much as guitar fx. I think that was what I was really trying to say.

How is that MXR compared to the Digitech Mike? I really like my digitech, but I'm not married to it or anything. hahaha

I usually don't use effects but have been know to add in a volume pedal on occasion. Maybe even a chorus to add some "air" to the tone and I've been thinking about an octive pedal for fun. But as I said, about 98% of the time it's just my bass, my tube amp and me.

For my bass tone, I use a volume pedal and DD-20. I love bass slapback delay as well as the full synth-like volume swells that i can use via the different memory storages on the DD20. Whenever I think about getting more effects I can not think of any different effects to my sound.

Amps on the other hand are a different question...

The Acoustic Image Clarus I'm trying to sell would make a cool pedalboard rig. It's small enough to fit on your pedalboard with your other effects, and just run speaker cables to your cabs...nice, compact, and very easy to set up!

Bass effects are great, and there are plenty of great options. Like any good seasoning - best used in moderation. I find that when playing in a 3 piece I have more room to use them. In larger bands, I tend to try to keep/protect my little sonic kingdom, and that is usually best done with subtle themes and variations on a single great basic bass tone.

Man, I am loving this new section! Thanks again to the Mods.

First, the Digitech EATS batteries like crazy. The MXR does not.
Second, the MXR does the auto wah/envelopfollower sound (which is all I wanted anyway) a lot cleaner IMO.
Plus you can really tweek the sounds a lot more. And if you're a knob turner and like to try different things a lot (with in the context of what the pedal does) then this is way cooler and more flexible.

And it sounds more organic to my ears.

And am I the only one who will post a pic of their board??

I use a chord. It usually works great.

Change the input/output cap(s) on most distortion pedals and you should be fine for a bass distortion.

I have had good luck with a Fuzz Face, RAT, Boss HM2, and Big Muff for distortions. Oddly enough I hate the RAT and Boss distortions for guitar.

Flip things around: As a guitar player and TGP member, you're probably going to buy "yet another" pedal sometime soon. Why not buy a good bass pedal that works well with guitar? I own a Fulltone Bass Drive that really sounds great with my guitars.

Just a thought....

I built a pedal board out of a walmart wooden cutting board and some velcro and double-sided tape (WAY cheaper than buying a nice one). On it i have a Toneworks Korg AX10B multi-processor, but i mostly just use that as a tuner and sometimes for a little distortion. Also an Arion MEQ-2 Bass EQ pedal and a Boss auta-wah which suprisingly is pretty sweet.

My bass player and I tried out a Barber LTD SR on his bass last night. The whole band agrees that it was incredible. We have spent a ton of time tweaking a Fulltone Bass Fulldrive with mixed results. But, we felt like the SR gave a lot of options with minimal fuss. With the tone at center, it was really the bassists original tone with some hair on it. IT was awesome. I think he'll be borrowing that one for a while.

I use a power supply for the digitech. I know what you mean though. I tried batteries on it and they last about 1 song. I was thinking about getting a couple of synths so I don't have to change the setting for different songs(I'm lazy). Thanks for the info.

I will post mine soon enough.

I love using front-end pedals for rubber-funky bass sounds. To make things easy for me, I took the rear lid from my 6-space rack and built a pedalboard into it using a sheet of diamond plate for the platform. Here it is:

http://members.firstinter.net/markster/bass/PedalLid%20Pedalboard%20final.jpg

Effects path: Dunlop Crybaby 105Q Bass Wah > Electro-Harmonix Micro Q-Tron > MXR Dyna Comp > Electro-Harmonix nano Small Stone Phase Shifter > MXR M-80 Bass D.I.+ Preamp/Distortion/D.I. Box > Line 6 Tone Core Liqua-Flange. The pedalboard fits right on the rear of my bass rack, so it's real quick to setup/tear down and very portable (Rack, Cab, Bass).

My rack has a Lexicon MX200 for delay/reverb effects. Two effects at a time and they use analog knobs, just like pedals. Each effect has a separate bypass footswitch in the homemade "1-2 Box" next to the MXR M-80 on the pedalboard.

Amplification is an SWR Interstellar Overdrive preamp; SWR WorkingPro 700W head; SWR Goliath III 4x10 cab.

Two Warwick basses: Corvette Standard 4-string fretless w/Bartolini pickups and Hipshot Xtender tuning key mods; Corvette $$ 5-string

Here's the rig:

i LOVE effects on my bass. the reason: i never know if i am gonna have to cover a distorted guitar part, or a low organ part, or have to fill up some space in the sound, so i have all of the tools for those situations. and they sound AWESOME. :D

my philosophy on effects usage:
if you OVERUSE effects (and by overuse i mean using EVERY effect on EVERY song without adjusting the effects so that they sound well within the song), then you should turn in your pedalboard. if you use effects on every song, BUT, you make sure that the effects sound GOOD within the song, then keep going! if you use effects sparingly and use them well when you do use them, keep at it!

Effects for bass--generally not my cup of tea.

I've used a EH bassballs--kind of a cool novelty thing, I stopped using it

Sans amp--unpleasantly gritty tone, make that mid cut stop! Not using it anymore

Diamond pedals compressor--good sounding compressor, but too subtle to notice much live. use it now and then

Blackstone appliances overdrive unit--this is a GREAT OD unit for bass--sounds like and amp, FEELS like an amp. Currently in use

I used an Ibanez Tube Screamer and Phaser along with a DOD FX25 envelope filter in the 80s with my basses. After I had most my gear stolen in the late 80s, I adopted the attitude that my only effect needed was my hands and ditched them all. Over the last 2 or 3 years I started experimenting again and have a few keepers and another few on my wish list.

I've owned and sold a few 'bass specific' effects boxes.... none of them thrilled me.

here's my bass board today:

I need to rewire it, the Thor just got added and a custom blender will be done in 2 weeks. I'm making my own cables from some gold plated right angles and a bunch of Canare GS-6 (I wanted GS-4 but I wanted orange jackets more ;) )

I am completely retooling my pedal board. I had a 40"x24" and just want something smaller- shooting for a 32x16 although it looks like I'll have to a bit bigger.

Current pedals:

"Blue and Gray" SBM
Morley PWB
Digitech Whammy
Tech 21 Midi Mouse
Korg G5
Boss Boss BF-2
Black cat Bass Octave Fuzz

It's all bypassed by a custom made Pacific Custom 7 channel bypass loop w/MB.

The board is DIY Pedaltrain rip-off. All cables are Sommer Spirits with Redco plugs.

I plan to sell that Exciter, somehow I don't like the sound anymore. Then going full analog by put back my Jacques Prisoner analog delay, Maxon chorus & Boss BF2B flanger, and maybe mod my Boss SD1 to be usable on bass.

My Bass Board use to be A , various DI boxes (depends on what I had at the time),Boss Tuner ,Dunlop Bass wah,EB Vol, Boss Bass Dis.(forget model #, yellow guy) Visal Sounds Route66 for the comp side. and a Boss Flange and Boss chorus, Digi-Tech Bass Synth for fun. That was the last set up, but it use to be WAY HUGE! Now days I rarely use a board (hell, barely used it then too) But I drop the OD in sometimes.

For distortion, I REALLY recommend the T-Rex Bass Juice. It's got a "Mix" knob on it that lets you blend the wet and dry signals. When you dial in some of the dry signal, you can restore the low-end that gets lost when you distort bass. It's the only distortion pedal I've ever liked on bass, and I've tried most of 'em (Boss, EH, Fulltone, Maxon, etc.).

My signal chain is an Alembic Europa 5 into:
- Boss OC-3 Super Octave
- EH Nano Bass Balls
- T-Rex Bass Juice
- Maxon PT9Pro+ Phaser

Then into an Alembic F-1X preamp, Crest CA9 stereo power amp (for bi-amping), Genz-Benz 410-XB2, Genz-Benz 115-XB2.

I'm currently looking for a "Q" sort of pedal, trying everything I can...

I've played 20 some odd years and never used a pedal until 6 months ago. Man, it's really shaking things up in my playing - I'm having a blast with my new tonal capabilities.

I just plug right into what was my guitar board. Crybaby 535Q, Dunlop Rotovibe, Boss TU-2, Line 6 MM4 and Boss DD5 delay. All set up in my NGM pedalboard. Add to that my 5 button footswitch for my Genz Benz GBE 1200 and it's full. The Rotovibe will likely come out and I may switch the MM4 out for my old Boss bass chorus.

Big fan of loopers - help to keep the pedal dance to a minimum - especially important on a tight board. I saw this (and the earlier incarnations over at TB, - good stuff!

My board is [finally] almost done. Waiting on a Blue Tail boost and the Dredgetone Angler and a volume pedal. Will have to get off my lazy arse and snap some photos.

I am not a big fan of bass pedal boards. I do like having a delay and modulation effects handy when I need them. Front loading and amp with a string pedals can actually have a positive effect on the tone of an electric guitar if the pedals are carefully chosen and the proper signal path is utlizied. With a bass, my ideal is to have a clean, warm tone. At worst, front loaded pedals defeats this purpose with a bass. At best, it adds a layer of difficulty to achieving it.

Therefore I refuse to build a huge bass pedal board. Most of those pedals, whether you realize it, hear it, admit it, compromise for it, or not -- are massive tone suckers as well as low end killers. And this has a coupling effect when you add 4-8 pedals in a string. Some of the boards on here would do well buying a Bradshaw or Cornish line driver.

What works for me, my solution, is to simply use a BassPod for the handful of effects I need. I have the amp simulators and cab/mic simulators turned OFF on the Pod (why run an amp simulation of an Eden into my real Eden head?) So I am basically just running through the Pod in a bypass mode. The tone is pretty much identical plugging into this way vs. straight into the amp. Then when I need an effect I can step on connected footswitch to change effects. No fuss, no muss.

The major strength of this is my signal is running through only one "pedal" versus running through a string of signal and tone leeches. And let's not even consider the various quality of patch cords and etc that are being introduced into the line!

Another major strength of using the Pod in this manner, is that with the Pod you can program the effects crossover for the delay or modulation effects. For example, you can set the cross-over point to 200Hz. This will make the signal below the 200Hz threshold un-effected. Everything above it gets the effect applied. This leaves your low-end untouched according to the Hz you set. Most low-end stealing pedals cannot do this. They suck up the bottom and you get an effected signal with no meat at the fundamental.

Anyways, it works for me. Different strokes for different folks. I can turn a delay and phase on and off, add a chorus or flange when I want to. And it is nearly a straight bypass with clean effects that do not suck out the low-end. Since I have minimal needs for effects the quality of the Line 6 delay and modulation works fine. If I had a heavier need, I would just upgrade to a tc electronics or eventide or comparable multi-effects rack processor and run it through my effects loop with a foot controller to switch between effects. That would be the ultimate for bass (in my opinion) in terms of pristine, effected, low end sound.

I actually just started playing bass. Before I did I had a nice amount of pedals. However, I had to sell them. I needed money to pay for my residency processing work. : /

So now I'm getting back into pedals. I just got a Big Muff Pi yesterday at Pro Music Exchange and I had one of those First Act Pedals coming. And I've got my tuner. Hopefully I won't need much more. Maybe Another Delay or reverb? Or a Volume Pedal for nice bass swells.

Check out the Prescription Electronics Depth Charge, or the B:Assmaster.
I have the PE DC and I love it. Both built with bass frequencies in mind. The DC has a blend knob that helps ensure that you don't simply disappear. Both of these are quite a bit fuzzier than a BM.

You may also just want to pick up an X-blender from Xotic.

Crowther Audio Prunes and Custard will get you there best, short of getting his gear (Akia) or the Korg Unit.

I have a Black Cat Bass Octave Fuzz which, like the Depth Charge, is designed to be a copy of the Maestro Bass Brassmaster. The P&C nails his tone closer IMO (I A/B'ed the BoF and the Depth charge, and picked the BoF- it was just plain nastier).

"harmoic percolator") and I love it for what it does. It could get you the Muse thing as well, but I personally would choose the DC over the P&C for that purpose.

Cheers,

Edward

I'll try the DC first, if it doesn't get me there I can always switch. A trusted friend recommended the BYOC Large Beaver, so I'd try that as well

It seems I played pretty much bass only for many years, but have been playing guitar a lot more lately. It's pretty amazing how this plus playing in a "sonically progressive" band has really opened up the possibilities for me on bass--almost like it's a whole new instrument. Here's my current board for bass and electric (and sometimes acoustic) guitar:

Due to current company, I've been experimenting with effect pedals for guitar... and BASS!

On my bass pedalboard, I use a Line 6 DL4 for Chorus, a Red Witch Deluxe Moon Phaser, RAF Mirage Compressor, EH Nano BassBalls and a EH Nano Muff that I purchased after listening to Muse's new album!

Any one else from here have a BASS pedalboard?
Or am I just a "frustrated guitarist"?!?:o

I have one!
On it sits an EBS MultiComp compressor, a Boss BF-2 Flanger, a Digitech MultiChorus, and a Digitech Bass Synth/Wah.

My board has gradually been shrinking... I started off with this (best pic I can find)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v165/justinmikehunt/DrawTheLine/Gunboats.jpg

In the back is my wireless and a Z-Vex woolly mammoth, then the front is a Boss Flanger, a Fulltone Bass Drive, and a Boss tuner.

I never was a fan of the mammoth. At first I was only using an active bass, which I later found out does not go well with it, but even once I had a passive bass, I never liked it... I felt it cut out too much low end. When I'd turn it on during a show, I'd feel like I turned myself off.

So I took off the mammoth. And I took off the wireless because I lost too much signal with it. And then I took off the flanger because I only used it on 1 song, and it wasn't that necessary for it.

Which brings me down to just the bass drive and tuner.

I've been through a couple configurations of what to do with it. When I've had fly dates, I'd just been bringing my tuner. I have a couple bass solos that I use the bass drive in though, and when the backline on some fly dates wouldn't give me a good enough tone for it, I was getting so upset.

So I've been flying with both pedals. Some people may say why bother with a board for just the 2 pedals, but it makes it so much easier for cable management.

I had turned a case that originally held an old nady wireless into a pedal board... It was the perfect amount of space for the pedals, but when I closed it, the rest of the case took up too much room in my suitcase.

So after all that rambling, here's what I built last week out of some scrap wood, and some tolex-like vinyl that I got at a fabric store.

I love it! I plan to get some metal corners for it, but other than that, it's done!

I'm pretty much a beginner bass player. I've spent most of my time and money on guitar gear. When I'm not playing through a Fender G-DEC, I use a Pod XT Live loaded with bass amp & fx models.

I'm a guitarist/bassist who has decided to dedicate myself to bass for the time being. I'm turning my guitar pedalboard into a guitar/bass pedalboard. I bought a Bass Big Muff and aBehringer BDI21 to add to the RC booster, Behringer multieffect, and tuner. I have some more space, so I will likely get a delay or reverb to use with either guitar or bass.

heres my current board. I sometimes run a cream pie into the Lomenzo hyperdrive for extra cream.
other than that this pretty much stays the same!
