These days, these two are my main basses. Both are Sadowsky NYC PJ5's. First is Ash/Maple, second is Alder/Morado. Both slam!

My main bass is my Melancon:

http://www.melanconforum.com/images/BriansMelanconBass.jpg

It has an extremely lightweight swamp ash body that is very resonant, and has a Duncan Antiquities P-Bass pickup, plus a Basslines Stingray-styled pickup. Rather than have a blend knob, I chose two separate volume controls for added tonal versatility. The neck is the absolute most comfortable neck I have ever played on......JBass style, but with enough wood to know you can get a good grip! After playing this bass for a few months I began selling my other basses, including a '66 P-Bass, a Modulus Q4, and a Lakland Joe Osborne bass. Three years late, I have no regrets selling the others.

Well I don't have a Photobucket account or anything like that so I can't post the pics but I've got a red quilt top Roscoe LG3006 6 string bass. I love this thing and found it can get all the sounds I hear in my head so I'm good to go. NO, I'm not saying it can cop every bass tone out there...it does what I want it to do.

My #1 is a 1998 G&L L-2000 that I had custom ordered for me with the #6 neck- so it's essentially a 1.5" nut width Jazz style neck.

Those are SO cool. Seriously.

What kind of music do you play? My bassist, well ex-bassist since he's moving out of state in a couple of weeks, has a semi-hollow Epiphone Jack Casady that he plays through a '67 SVT head and 8x10. That thing THUNDERS. With that guy, I always played trashy bluesy/punk/garage/deetroit rock and that bass was always perfect.

Yes, they are Sticks, and even the builder asked why I wanted two identical ones. It's common for players to have multiple Sticks for different tunings and string configurations (there are many). I'm not much for variety, but I did want a backup. Every couple of years I send my Sticks in for a factory tune-up, and it's nice to send them in one at a time so I always have at least one to play.

This is my only bass...

http://www.theangelconversations.com/pics/BassRig.jpg

I built it myself in 1992 out of some left-overs from other projects :). The neck is salvaged from a Matsumoku-factory instrument of some sort that a previous owner had tried to turn into a Steinberger copy , and the body is a single piece of Iroko that I was going to make a LP Junior from but proved too heavy... I had both of them lying around for a while until suddenly I had one of those 'light bulb' moments ;).

Schaller tuners and bridge, Duncan Basslines Hot P-Bass and Hot Jazz Stack (recently fitted, it had some generic ones in it for years, which still sounded good but were too microphonic), with volume, blend (pointer) and tone controls, and a 'vintage/modern' switch - it either runs the P pickup in series and the J as a true single coil (growly/vintage/noisy), or the P pickup in parallel and the J as a hum-cancelling stack (clear/modern/quiet).

It's a little neck heavy due to not being able to inset it into the body quite as deeply as I really wanted because of how the original heel area had been hacked, but it's OK with the extra-wide strap. I've owned many basses since building this ugly duckling, some vintage, some modern, some expensive... but not one of them sounded as good as my home-baked special - it has an enormous, piano-like ring and sustain, and is extremely even and defined up the whole length of the neck. I really can't take any credit for it though, it was entirely accidental :).

(The amp is a Trace Elliot V8 400W all-tube head and 4x10"+horn, and that other thing you probably don't want to see in this part of the forum ;) is a ProCo Juggernaut Bass Rat :D.)

It's actually not that bad, it only weighs 64lbs - light for a 400W tube amp, and you can easily carry it with the center handle. But yes, the end ones are best when putting it on top of the cab... and even more so on the cab that was sold as standard with it, which was an 8x10" in true Ampeg/Trace tradition - that's really the cab for the V4, and although it will handle the full 400W the impedance is mismatched (8 ohms not 4). It still sounds HUGE though, and there's no way I'm moving an 8x10"... just NO way :).

I've never had an 8x10. No desire to. However I've found it's EASIER for me to move my 2x15 than either of my other cabs. To load it into the car it's "tilt and push" 115 pounds, instead of "deadlift" 92 pounds.

Sorry for the hijack into amp territory...:AOK

There is indeed wisdom in that. My Hartke 4x10 is nice and compact, which actually makes it a pain to load in and out of the trunk. I've been thinking something "tall and tilt" would be better.

I've always been intrigued by the SWR Henry the 8x8; anyone here ever use one?

That one is only 91lbs :).

I find the opposite - it's easier to move that than the slightly lighter but taller reflex 1x15" I had before, which was awkward for someone of my height in that if I picked it up by the side handles it jammed uncomfortably under my chin and banged against my shins... at least that thing is a straight lift to waist height and I can sort-of walk with it.

It's funny really - the head is a pound lighter than my Mesa Blue Angel, and the cab is a whole seven pounds lighter than my Tremoverb :). I must be getting stronger in my old age if I still want to own this stuff ;).

Without a doubt the finest basses I ever got my fingers on.

Well, I had a major change in "players" here, so I deleated my first post and re-posting as an update!

Check it:

Beautiful basses too!

Nothing too fancy, it's an E-series MIJ Fender from '87 or so. Fiesta Red, with an '80s brown-epoxy EMG P pickup under the chrome cover. Strung with 15-year old GHS flatwounds, and it sounds great.

shot of my main stick,,, 84' 5 string Quantum. Graphite neck thru, hand carved graphite bridge. Inner is basswood, outer seems to be Rosewood or Paduk? not really sure. Controls are,,
master volume
pickup blend
master passive tone
master EMG-EXB control
two 3 postion switch single coil simulators, one for each pickup.
position 1 is full sound, pos 2 has moderate bass cut to sim single coil, pos 3 is even more drastic.
Plays and sounds like a dream. :)

It's hard to narrow them down.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v174/mgood1/basses/BB75P/065small.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v174/mgood1/basses/B4F/064small.jpg
These two get the most playing time - '03 BB75P and '03 B4F. I can cover most of what I need to do with a fretted five and a fretless four.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v174/mgood1/basses/LB70/067small.jpg
But I could not do without my '89 LB70. If I'm in an unfamiliar situation and need a bass that inspires confidence, this is what I grab. It's the most comfortable neck I've ever played. I grew up on this bass. It wasn't my first, but it was my main bass for thirteen years, and my only bass for a while. It's probably worth the least of the bunch, but if the house was on fire, this is the first thing I'd grab on the way out the door.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v174/mgood1/basses/V440T/131small.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v174/mgood1/basses/BB70P/066small.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v174/mgood1/basses/BB75PF/MikesBass1small1.jpg
The '86 V440T gets almost no playing time. I keep it more as a novelty. The '02 BB70P is almost completely superfluous. I bought it because it's pretty. It is a good bass though. I use it for alternate tunings and such. The '05 BB75PF is my newest bass, a fretless five. It is truly a work of art but has not become one of my main "go-to" players . . . yet.

EDIT: These are all Carvin, BTW.

My main players (and introduction), can't survive a day without 'em :D

'91 Alembic Elan Quilted Maple stormburst finish, '87 Alembic Coco Bolo, '83 Alembic Spoiler Koa (Black) and with me a '91 Fender Prodigy with Alembic pickups & Electronics.
The '83 Spoiler is the main main player :JAM

I could probably get an exact "birth" date from Mica, but I've never bothered. The Spoiler is a great player. One of these days I might pick up another, but the prices/value on these is starting to creep up. I've also got a 1976 Series I with a birdseye maple top, but it tends to stay at home most of the time.
