View Full Version : like a Powerblock, but lower wattage?

I like the idea of a Powerblock as a small, inexpensive backup, but I mainly gig with a Vox AC15CC (30 watt speaker) or a Reverend Hellhound (50 watt speaker).

The 75 watts of the Powerblock is way too much for either of those speakers, so what's a lower wattage alternative?

anyone?

I've thought of an epiphone valve jr, which I'd need to mod, but - no replies?

Whats the point in wanting a power amp if you want LOWER wattage?? Besides, its solid state so you can pretty much have it at a lower volume and not worry. Also- ss needs more wattage to keep up with tubes. FYI

I don't think the Powerblock puts out the same 75 watts as a tube amp would. And it doesn't have the tube-amp characteristic of sounding better when turned up either. It's about the same turned down as up. I played mine full-blast through a Scumback H75-HP (60 watt rated, I think) and it was not as loud as my 50-watt TR Opal at about 1/2.

I assume those are both 8 ohm speakers? The PB only gets it's full 75 watts in dual mono with a 4 ohm load. I'd guess the 8 ohm load (which works just fine, the amp is happy as a clam) would cause the amp to produce somewhere around 35-50 watts .... I routinely use mine with 2 greenbacks( @ 8 ohms) and the amp's master around 3:00... sounds great, no issues. Also, I do find the PB to sound much better as it's opened up.... of course, the greenbacks start to give it up, which helps immensely. I'd use the PB with your hellhound's 50 watt 8 ohm Alltone (assuming that's what is in it)without a second thought.

When I got my first PB, I compared it to a Sunn 200S (had it handy). With the PB bridged into a 16-ohm cab (doing 75W), it hung with the Sunn. With it bridged into 8 ohm (two 16-ohm cabs), it buried the Sunn.

The PB is 150W mono/75W stereo according the manual. If you bridge to mono, you need 8 ohms minimum, and it put out 150 watts.

so, the CPB150 puts out way too much for a 50 watt speaker, never mind the 30 watt speaker in the AC15CC.

You probably don't have to turn it up all the way to finish your gig.
