View Full Version : How many of you only have one amp?

I almost feel guilty posting this in a world where so many have so little, but there goes. I have two amps, but one is a backup. Both are boutique amps.
I was thinking of selling the backup and getting a really nice tele, rickenbacker, something in those veins. Then also picking a crate power block for gigging as a backup. We don't currently gig now, and being an original band, won't have the heavy playing schedule until we're famous!:roll
My number one amp does most of what I want an amp to do, but I am a worry wart who has always enjoyed the luxury of a backup. But it basically sits in my practice room, untouched.
Any thoughts on owning only one amplifier?

I only own one amp. I used to have two or three at a time. I have settled on an Ecstasy 101B for the moment and couldn't be happier. Given my schedule, I have limited time to play, so I figured I'd have one really special amp that puts a huge smile on my face as oppossed to a few that just make me grin.
If I was gigging regularly, I might rethink that strategy.

I owned only one amp for years and GIGED with just one amp and never had a problem. At this point I just sold my 66 super and do not own anything:eek: at this time. But I'm looking for something. If you can afford more then amp without causing a financial strain,Go for it.In the end all you need is a guitar & amp & soul.:dude

For just a home player like I am I only see the need to own one amp with a great master volume and a few pedals to mix it up. That being said I own two amps but one was purchased for just the grab and go thing just to take to an occasional jam.

One amp here. I only play at home too. I'm going to a jam today but it's the first time in over a year. I live in a small town and there just isn't that much going on. There are a few players who make me look foolish and loads of them who are just plain terrible, so here I sit.
I have a Gries 35 and it does everything I've ever looked for in an amp. 99% of the time I just plug straight in.
There have only been a couple times in my life when I've had more than one amp and even when I played a gig, I took just one. I won't haul any more than I have to. Spare tubes and fuses were always in the bag but I never had to use them.

I've been gigging regularly for 30+ years with only one amp, (at a time). Always a tube amp. Never had a back-up, never had a problem with the exception of maybe a cable or two. Lately I've been thinking of using two amps, but not because of a perceived need for a back-up, but to run a wet/dry set-up

I'm a play at home player at the moment. I find my tastes go for the 2 basic camps of classic rock/blues tone.........That early Marshall Plexi tone ala the Allmans, ZZ Top and Peter green. And.........that American Fender , I hate to say Texas tone becuase Texas is becoming a bad word in some parts around here but you get what I mean.
So I own a Blockhead firstborn 18 watt plexi Clone and I have a 68 Super reverb on the way. These 2 amps should fill my needs nicely. More then I should ever need. http://www.thegearpage.net/board/images/icons/icon14.gif
Look at what your needs are and then fill them as best you can.

I would consider you to be very fortunate with 30+ years on stage without incident.
I have had Grid resistors/fuses/output transformers blow, I have even had a Marshall head fall face down off of a 4X12 Slant cab because the entire club was shaking from people dancing, jumping up and down.... Geeze, My poor Marshalls.
They have been through hell and back.
Needless to say, I'm the type of player that doesn't mind carrying a spare to a job. ;)

I gigged (for a living ) with a blackface vibrolux for 10 years with only one problem with a fuse on one gig. Never a backup. Incredible. Bought it in "93" for $750 Best amp I've owned so far. Ah the bills........

Currently I own only one amp, but being a regular gigger, I don't like the idea. A second small amp is heading my way soon.

I have a DSL 100 right now, which sounds great. And I have a small no name SS 5 watt practice amp.
Although, thanks to the snobbery I am around, I will probably sell the DSL, buy a HK Trilogy and a Metro 100w Plexi kit.
I will also change the back of my speaker cabinet from mdf to 13ply birch... look what y'all have done to me!

Play/record in home studio in my spare time. I have an '80s JCM 800 2204 that I voiced a little darker (one wire mod 1987-ish) as my only amp. Thinking of building a JTM 45 kit as a mod/experiment platform.

1 amp, 1 guitar. My Stiletto covers alot of bases, and the LP with the RS Guitarworks electronics upgrade makes it much more versatile as well with different pup switch and tone controls interacting properly now.
I've got two amps but the other is a Fender MiniTwin. :D
So really I use just one amp and it covers all I need it to. I have a Diezel Einstein 1x12 combo.

99% of the time it's my Bogner EL-34 Shiva w/ Reverb. I do have a beat up Crate V32 Palomino as a "backup", but I never use it because the Bogner never gives me problems. It still gives me piece of mind to have a good backup amp though and the Crate will do its job well in the event that something does happen.

I have one amp. It's a great one, but it cost a lot, so I sold off some other amps to get it.
That was 3 1/2 years ago, and I've been a one-amp guy ever since.
I use my amp in the studio daily. No worries.

Both great amps....but the Swart does everything I need in an amp... for now !! LOL
Ummm...I do too, if you don't count the other 8!

I have 4:
Two Rock CR Sig with 1x12 cab - Main amp for gigs/jam sessions no pedals for my "signature sound".
'64 Fender Deluxe - Great cleans for recording using studio pedal board for non-"signature sound" parts.
'65 Princeton Reverb - Recording cranked without effects and smaller gigs/jam sessions.
'65 Vibro Champ - Around the house practice amp - love the tremelo and portability.
I am however moving towards having just 2; the TR (live and recording) and the VC (portability and practicing) however the PR and Deluxe are in mint condition and continue to escalate in value.

One amp that I keep where my band practices and one amp at home where my band does not practice.
I just don't like lugging an amp back and forth. The backup does get to go to gigs but we don't play out that much so mostly it sits at home.

I couldn't do it!
I don't gig these days. I spend hours in the studio, though, and for recording more that one is best for me.
I run a Voodoo Lab splitter into a Peavey C30, Fender Pro Jr., Fender Blues Jr. and Carvin VT112. Always at least two on each track.
If I had to choose just one.........Please don't make me do this!!!!!

I have two amps, but really only play through one. I gig occassionally, mostly in the summer months when we play once or twice a week. But "back in the day" I only had one amp, and giged/toured up and down the West Coast with no problems at all.
The only reason I have two now, is to cover the bases of styles and voicings.
This is a hard place as it is easy to want and want and want, as there are so many great items to choose from.
I tech I was speaking with the other day said "what is the difference between and guitar player and a large pizza? The pizza can feed a family of four."
Simple is better sometimes.

Me, pretty much.
I have an Atomic Reactor 112-50. I also have a Crate Powerblock and a Roland Cube 60. But that's one amp and two nice backups on the lower end of the food chain in contrast to the folks around here.
If I had money, maybe it'd be different. But I'd have to have money to tell you that; and well, I don't. So there you are. :D

Marshall HW 2061x....my one and only tube amp.
I have a Powerblock for a backup, and a
Lovepedal 1/2 watt for home use.
I would like to add a comparable 20 watt
Fender voiced head. That would keep me
happy for a while.....but then I should have
a Vox head to........ooops.....crap.....:p

One amp here. Currently, my only amp is a Roland Microcube.
I'm shopping around for my next gigging amp (a combo of some sort), and that will be it. It's just not in the cards for me to be a multi-amp person right now. But honestly, that's okay with me, I'm still happy playing guitar.

Two amps that I use in tandem. So... I guess you can call each of them a "back up" for the other. However, I am sooooo use to the two together that It would be weird if one were not to be there. I guess I've gotta get two more LOL. Or would it just be one? I don't know!!!

So if one fails then half your sound is gone, if you were to back up that rig would you get only one backup or one for each amp?

I have a Fender Deluxe Reverb and get along fine. I occasionally toy with the idea of adding another amp, maybe a Marshall type, but to date I've been able to resist the urge.

I have 2 of the same head, one stays in my car. Not only does this give me a backup at gigs that allows me to not have to bring spare tubes, fuses, etc etc. But it also allows me to send the head back to the guy that made the thing for tune ups etc and not worry that it is gone 2 weeks.
Usually my gigs are over an hour away from my house, and when my old amps have fizzed out in the past, it has never been a fuse, or a tube always something foolish and weird that albeit not a lot of money, caused me such headache at the gig that I just bought 2x amps.
Currently i dont have an amp...:D
Top Hat Club Royale 2x12 combo is the only amp that I have owned for the past five years. I have gigged this amp ALOT and have never had an issue. I am, however, thinking of getting another Top Hat to run along side my club (not for backup but for thicker/bigger/different tone).
Ahab
Being a university student I can't afford to keep more than one amp on me. So on my amp quest I sell my old amp to get a new one instead of adding a new one into my collection.
I have one guitar amp and one bass amp. Happy camper! :)

I guess I'd have to get one [backup] for each. Luckily (??) I'm presently only doing studio stuff and it's not a huge deal. The Zs have never worried me but I figure when the giging starts up again, it'll be time for another 66 and another Maz.

One amp ... a Classic 30 1x12 combo.
Since the small people started arriving in my house I've invested in a PODxt so I don't disturb anyone else. Every couple of weeks I manage to find 8 minutes of time when I can plug into the C30 and not disturb anyone, and it reminds me how much I love valve tone and feel.
I've been thinking of upgrading the C30, but have found it difficult to find much that's better without spending 3-4 times the money ... but I've definitely enjoyed playing through valves a lot more often in all the shops I've tried stuff in :)

In the midst of downsizing, I will probably just keep my Victoria Regal II.
Victorias are known to be pretty bullet proof and the ability to change power tubes makes it operate like several amps when recording....5 watts to 35 watts with one or 2 of any octal power tube with no re biasing.

I have three guitars and one amp. It's a Reinhardt Vintage 50. Later this year I'm going to have Reinhardt make me another one exactly like it for a backup.
