I just placed an order for a Ron Kirn Custom strat. It's basically a replica Jimmy Herring strat: AM standard neck, rosewood, 6000 fretwire..scalloped feel, and Seymour Duncan 59's. Everything is basic....black body.......just a classy looking fender style guitar. I was more concerned with the action and fret job. Apparently this is where he shines from what I've read. Great guy to boot. Answered all the emails quickly so far. Offered to get the guitar done and in my hands in a month but said the nitro would still be shrinking and the guitar grain would show. So its gonna take 6 to 8 weeks. Gonna be the longest time ever. The guitar only cost $2040.00. The $40 is shipping. So I'm getting a custom built strat for a great price and probably the best action I'll ever lay my hands on......from what I've read. Great guy. I'll post a review when I get the guitar. You can check his very detailed site out at http://www.ronkirn.com (http://www.ronkirn.com/)

I'm checking out some of the pictures on his site, looks like he does some nice work. The Daphne Blue Strat, the Mary Kaye Strat, and the Mary Kaye Tele all look sweeet. Hopefully yours will turn out just as nice. Let us know as things progress.

I lust after the blackgaurd (basic T) in his gallery. :drool

Also like his straightfoward build philosophy, and the countersunk neckplate and string ferrules are a nice touch!

But it's his obsession with great neck/fretwork that make him stand out to me!

Definitly see one in my future.

Rockeye, looking foward to pics and comments when yours arrives!

You bet, I'll also be posting reviews and pics of a quad set of Tone Tubbies for my Super Reverb.(2 alnicos, 2 ceramics) I'm actually getting kind of pissed because they should already be here. Buyers beware of www.s2amps.com They claim to have many speakers in stock and they're selling point for Tone Tubby is they ship them already broken in. We'll see if I ever get em'. The Ron Kirn guitar should be in my possession by the end of May, just in time to maybe take it to a Derek Trucks show and have him sign it.

I absolutely love that finish

in fact I may have to copy that colouring, just with a touch less blue in the burst tone, for my guitar (that has yet to be finished...or built...).

Also I love the look of covered pickups on a strat like that. And at that price...damn.

Yeah the color is actually supposed to be crimson burst. I chose it after seeing a mandolin on the Fender Website(which I think is no longer available from them). I think the camera doesn't really do the guitar justice. When I get it I'll try to post pictures that really show it off.
I got lucky when Ron said no extra charge for the finish. I just wanted something classy and non pretentious.......ya' know what I mean.

classy and non pretentious.......ya' know what I mean.

That basically sums up how I feel about it. It's very nice.

Yep.. there's no blue in the finish... that's reflections from the ambient light....

If I adjust the contrast to show the body, the pickguard gets washed out...

In person it's one good lookin' lady..

So this guitar is great!! The color is exactly what I wanted and the fret job is stellar. These pictures don't do the guitar justice. The notes just sorta bloom when you play.......i guess thats the 6000 fretwire. I can sure get the Jimmy Herring tones I wanted now. Ron Kirn did a great job for a great price.......couldn't ask for more.
Now all I need to do is pawn some old stuff, visit a sperm bank several times and find a girlfriend willing to sell her eggs for me so I can afford an Artinger Hollowbody.

Is it just me or do those saddles look real high and at a real steep angle? Is that to deal with the high pickups, or vice versa? Why is that? Is this common?....just curious (and maybe ignorant).

No, not at all. Its just the picture. The more I play this guitar the better it feels. The fret wire really does the job. 6000 fret wire really isn't that big. It just took a little time adjusting to the scale length, but it really is a keeper.

Yeah, I was surprised by the 6000 frets too. When I saw ‘em I was thinking Man... this stuff would be heavy for a bass… but I gotta tell ya, I loved the feel… and they’re gonna last for ever…. The first refret on that baby will be by some Ooooooold guy that is practicing an ancient art, lost sometime back in the early part of the 21st Century.

The voice of the guitar is remarkable… It had been quite a while since I did a H H Strat, and had forgotten the sound…. Just an all around A+ on your choices for that rascal.
