Easy, I only own one bass. Lusted after a Roscoe for years before I finally got it. Everything after that seemed pointless.

Is this like a "dream bass" question or "your favorite bass" question?
If it's a "favorite bass" it's my 98 G&L L-2000 that I had custom ordered for me. Basically a #6 neck (like a Jazz neck), and the pickup selector switch changed to a 2 position: neck and neck+bridge. No bridge solo option.
If it's a "dream bass..." I was after Scott Lentz to build me a 54/56 style P with a Jazz style neck, Tele headstock, rosewood fingerboard and get some sort of active/passive preamp type thing...

the one I own, a super G&L SB-2, combines the best of a P and J... the neck is the dead-on twin of my friend's real '62 Jazz Bass, the sweetest bass I've ever played. This one is not too heavy, plays like a dream, sounds like a Mack truck...;)

With regard to how this bass sounds, it is simply amazing, and the reason I would pick it if I could only have one bass. The tone is rich, full, deep, round, and warm. Definately "Old School". The third control is for the impedence setting for the pickup. It yields three different flavors to choose from but I just leave it on the low impedence setting on 50. She's a "keeper" for sure! Oh, yeah, Jack Cassady seems to be fond of these basses as well!

I owned a Pedulla Buzz in dark cherry maybe 7 years ago that was gorgeous and sounded great. I primarily play guitar so couldn't justify keeping it, but I miss it - that would be the one.

Fodera VW Sig Monarch fretted 4.
Done.

It would have to be "The Highlander" bass.
"There can be only one!"
I don't own one, but TNJ has a good call with the Fodera VW - P and J style pups on a great build. Flexable and sweet to boot!
Cheers,
Edward

From a practical perspective, I'd keep my Peavey T-40. Besides being built like a tank, it is the most tonally versatile bass I've owned.
And before everybody says how heavy T-40s are, yes, that's true, but when I'm actually wearing it it doesn't feel heavy at all, much to my surprise and delight.

I would have Matt Friedman make a bass just like my Acacia Custom 4, however I'd like a burled buckeye top, a U-retro pre-amp, a Hipshot detuner w/matching hipshot ultralights, black hardware and an adjustable brass nut.
Unfortunately, he has retired. :(

I'd lovvvvve if Roger would make a Modern 4 (instead of a 5). Alternatively, I could get the J bass with the Modern pups in the Modern pup locations.

Why not just take up the 5? It ain't rocket surgery.

I've thought about it.
Every time I pick up a 5 I play so bad it's demoralizing. I see and feel the B and think "dang, what's that doing there and it's in my way." "Ooops, thought I was hitting the low E but....um..there's the D strin---uh..A string." Granted I've only spent a few minutes with a 5 here and there.
I imagine if I actually spend a considerable amount of time with one I'd get the hang of it.

I have to agree that those basses do sound great and versatile, but way too heavy for me aging/aching body!!!

I just got my first 5-er a little while back and now it is my only bass(Sting-Ray style). I better get used to that B string or I am in big trouble!!!

Honestly? You'd probably adjust in a day or two. And few things are as satisfying as a nice low B or A - the lowww notes.

This is the best all around bass I've ever played. It's a 35" scale 5 string Ibanez 'BTB 5CPD NT' Ltd Production padauk/maple/mahogany/body with bubinga fretboard; Bartolini active p'ups/eq. This is one of less than 4 of a limited run made in Japan's Prestige group. One awsome player. And easy on the eyes too.
