Hey guys,
I have a 1996 MIJ 62 RI Jazz bass that came with US pickups and while I like the sound, I was wondering if there were other pickups recommended that would be versatile for vintage vibe as well as modern playing?
Any and all suggestions welcome!

I'm assuming you want more "modern" tone options, as a '62 RI should obviously cover the vintagey thing.
If so, check into adding a J-Retro on board pre, or perhaps a Sadowsky stompbox.

My limited experience is that it's tough to find pickups that do a vintage sound really well, but also do a modern sound. My solution to the same problem was to purchase the Sadowsky preamp/DI pedal, which cost me $239. With that pedal, I can keep my "vintage" tone and then merely step on the pedal button to make the bass sound like it has active "modern sounding" pickups.

My favorite replacement J pickups are Duncan Quarter Pounders. They sound vintage, but fatter and more powerful, which imo makes them somewhat more versatile. Best of all, they just sound great.

the fralins are great. sweet vintage vibe with a nice grindy upper midrange for that classic jbass sound.
want a more revved up take on the old school sound? try a set of nordstrand NJ4's.

I got a set in my Jazz. They're expensive, but every time I compare mine to anyone else's I'm glad I made the purchase. They just sound perfect.
+1 on the use of an outboard pre-amp. Sadowsky, Fodera, and Aguilar all make great ones. I personally use the Aguilar and am very pleased.

Also check here (http://www.has-sound.com/harnesses.htm#Pre-Wired%20Loaded%20Pickguard%20Assemblies) for some bass harness options. I did the 5 way mounted on the plate.
