Just wondering about the 6" crack on the back of my gibson es-333. I've been told it was a laquer check but to be honet im still not totally sure. Its about 6 inches and roughly a millimeter wide. It has been worrying me and im just wondering what possibilities it could be and how much it would cost to fix, if it can be
Thanks in advance

Bump for any suggestions, also wondering what kind of a dip in value of the guitar this will cause

Impossible without a picture but it should be easily fixable but cosmetically it depends on the colour as to how much spray work is needed .
Value? down at least 30%

A millimeter? That's bigger than 1/32". That is a canyon. You should be able to see if it is in the wood or just on the surface of the finish. Pics please.

Yeah, hard to say without seeing it. However, these guitars are laminated and it is doubtful the crack is in more than the top layer if it is in the wood at all. If the crack runs in a perpendicular (across the grain) direction from the heel and butt it is only a finish fissure. Most veneer ply construction is rotary cut (like peeling in a pencil sharpener) and would tend to be more plain cut than quarter sawn lessening the likely hood that this is a wood check. How about the pic?

go into a dark room and shine a flashlight on one side of the panel and look at the other. you should be able to get a better picture of how serious the crack is(if it goes through the finish)
