Let's see those 8 string basses. 12 strings as well. I have an 8 string build on cue for after I complete my current short scale 4 project and I'm looking for ideas.

'94 Hamer US Chaparral 8 String Custom, 2 piece flame maple body (solid, not veneer/cap). It's frickin' awesome!

That's F'ing beautiful. I think I could deal with the Hamer headstock if the rest looks like that.

Those 8 strings have to be really great for filling out the sound if your playing a trio! Imagine Cream is Jack Bruce played one of those during Claptons long running solos!

Yeah, she's a beauty! I initially wasn't too fond of the headstock myself, but after time I bonded with it. I think it's cool as hell now, lol.

Back when I got it, Hamer was the only dealer doing 8s and 12s of that caliber. Since then (or right around that time) Zon, Pedulla and a host of others started doing very nice dual / triple course basses. To be honest, I probably would still have gotten a Hamer. IMO, they are hands down the best sounding and playing of the dual / triple course basses (although the Zons play real nice, too)!

Sadly, I may be forced to sell her soon. Both my wife and I are getting laid off - we both work for the same corp, :crazy :messedup  :crazy :messedup ! I am holding out hope, but as the most valuable piece I own she'd be the first out the door. Fingers crossed, though!

I'll see if I can find some clips at home for the tone. She chimes clean and sounds like godzilla eating a car distorted, lol. I'll post 'em up if I got 'em!

What's the company that's been working with Tom Petersson?

There was Hamer, Chandler then Waterstone.

I had an Ibanez Artist 8-string bass in the 80's. Never really got the hang of it...

Here is a link to my Hamer 12. Me and my partner both did one inspired by our bud Tom Petersson.

Thank you!

Waterstone was the one I was thinking of.

I want a 10-string like John Paul Jones has been using.

My 12 string MusicVox is among the herd here. It's a great sounding bass, but a chore to play. Neck is so wide it's stressfull on the hands. I'd like to get one with a slightly narrower neck. Otherwise, it's a unique flavor, and actually plays in tune. Like a strap on piano.

I've had a few Hamer 12vers/8s. I ordered this one about 5 years ago and haven't looked back (their first B-12M in over a decade):

My twin bro ordered a matching B8M - the tops and backs are split from the same maple billet, and the bodies and necks were all cut from the same log. Here's a shot I grabbed at the factory before they shipped:

That is very very COOL!

I have spent the last 20 years lusting after a Rickenbacker 4008 or a lottery jackpot to afford a Ric 4005/8

I used to have a custom 8-string built by Tom Keating out of NH. It was neck through, and the neck AND wings were solid Brazilian rosewood . Sucka was heavy (no pics unfortunately).

After gigging with that one for awhile, and playing around with some triple coursers, I'm of the mind that you might as well just go for the 12. It just gives you more of what you play these things for in the first place. And playability is generally (and surprisingly) no tricker than an 8. If I do another, it'll definitely be a 12.

Best value on these imo are the old Dean Rhapsodys; incredibly good for the money.

I owned one of the green ones like yours and the neck width made it terribly hard to play. The early Tom Petersson Waterstones had necks like that too.. The went to a smaller neck on later runs of them.

Anybody play the OTHER kind of 8-string, like Conklin makes?
