Sorry if this has been discussed before but I couldn't find it by searching...
Anyone know what gear/technique Larry Graham used to get his classic fuzz bass sound? It always sounded to me like clean bass plus fuzz on a separate treble-only signal. Listening to Jack Casady on Hot Tuna's _Burgers_ LP the other day I heard something similar on "Water Song." Anyone know how these sounds were achieved?

I don't know how Larry Graham does it, but when recording with fuzz I always split the signal and run one direct and one through the fuzz pedal. That gives more mixing options, plus you can keep a full low end if the fuzz pedal doesn't.

Yes, that *is* interesting. Certainly not what he used originally, but does a pretty good imitation, and answers the question about mixing fuzz with clean. My research suggests that Boss bakes a bass fuzz that alows that also.

I get closest to his sound using a Big Muff! green one.

i got Larry's Fuzz tone using (oddly enough) an EHX English Muff'n. all the EQs turned all the way up, and the Gain all the way up as well. it sounds close enough for my ears.

There is an old vid of him knocking around where he uses a Jugganaut but it's not the new one Proco recently made.
He has been known to use one of the old full size Danelectro Fab Tone
Biff Muff is indeed the one pedal that can do it.

Baja Tech makes a pedal called DaMOAF (Da Mother Of All Fuzzes) that sounds really good. Thry can usually be found used for under $100!
