View Full Version : Deluxe Reverb - rectifier question
I have a '73 Deluxe Reverb that uses a 5U4GB rectifier tube. Is it possible to switch to a GZ34, and if so, what is involved in making the switch?

Most likely the B+ will be way too high for the 6V6 plates and screens with a GZ34. When Fender switched to the 5U4GB, they bumped up the AC voltage on the B+ secondary of the power tranny to compensate for the increased voltage drop across the rectifier. With a 5U4GB, my 71 is already pushing plate voltage really high (445VDC usually) for a 6V6. Inserting a GZ34 could bump that up another 10 or 20 VDC. Not recommended...
UNLESS you are using JJ 6V6s, in which case you can probably just plug a GZ34 in and run with it, but you'll need to rebias. Whatever rectifier you use, make sure your filter caps and electrolytic bias / bypass caps have been replaced with new ones.
