Which directions give more headroom, hot or cold biasing?

Colder, though there's a point beyond which the amp will sound like total crap.

So is this simulator wrong and misleading?

For the most part, "headroom" lives in the transformers. For any significant increase, that's where you need to start making changes.

Maybe you can quote the particular part you're referring to.

While I'm not a tech (though I do work on my own amps), I think tube design cannot be discounted. Good example would be changing from an EL34 to a 6550. The 6550 certainly has more headroom.

The animated, interactive demo thingy. But I understand what they're getting at. That shows tubes with different "bias points" running in an amp with the same bias setting.

Yes, but I think this thread assumes no other variables than the bias setting for a particular pair of tubes in a particular amp.

Although I'm not certain, I don't believe electrons have smiley faces.
I can't help but wonder if the interactive calculator is intended for a basic voltage amplifier.

depends on what music you're playing of course. the electrons cry when you play the blues, they chill out when you play jazz, and they scream with rage when you play punk & metal. the smiling ones are stoned I think.
