View Full Version : Stevens Basses
Just wondering if anyone has had the opportunity to play one of Michael Stevens' basses. I have played a few of his guitars and they are amazing.
I am very tempted to pull the trigger on one of his basses - which are very well priced, especially considering what one of his guitars fetch these days.

I have a 4 string bolt-on coming at some point. I thought they were a steal. Haven't played one but have to trust Michael. He's been great to work with on the LJ that is coming in the next couple of weeks. I trust him. Be patient with him because it's just him; however, he does a great job of keeping you in the loop (unlike others).

Had a Slant 5 on loan from Matte for a few days and it was ridiculously good. Played and sounded wonderful and was a feather, to boot.
You guys are not good for my wallet!!!
Thanks for the last bit of encouragement I needed to pull the trigger on this one.
Actually, a long lead time is a good thing at this moment, as there are some other things already in the works...

Edward

basses (bodies and some necks) have been made for some time...I think years ago actually. They have just been sitting around while he got going. I think the lead time is not as long but I may be wrong here.
I would love to hear your impressions of the bass once you have it. Some time soon, I'll have to contact Mr. Stevens and make it happen.
I know already that you will be very happy with your LJ! My buddy has a couple, and they are simply stellar.
Keep us posted.

Edward

IIRC he designed the Roscoe Beck sig bass when he was at Fender (maybe afterwards?) so that might be an option worth considering. Granted, it's not gonna be one of his handmade beauties (and good lawd does he make some fantastic creations), but it might be a way to get there on the cheap. Still, I prefer the shape of his own basses (and the guitar version as well; Matte has/had one of those as well; pink crackle finish IIRC :D)

Thor,
I have one of Michael Stevens Slant 5 basses...... the actual one you see on his website.... the pink metallic one.
I really like the 35" scale and his "slant" on the pickups. The bass has mini switches on the underside (leg) and you can switch between and in and out of the coils.... giving many different combinations. I have found my favorite and there it stays. Mine is a bolt neck 5 string and the sustain is unbelieveable and note definition without equal, IMHO. I believe that it is a combination of string lenth, slant pickups and Michael Stevens no compromise attitude to a quality build that puts his creations streets ahead of his competition.
As Tradarama says, Michael Stevens very cooperative and easy to get along with and will give attention to your needs as well as giving sensible advice.
Talk with him.
