I've been thinking of adding a delay to my signal chain, something to add depth and ambience. Not really interested any freaky, spacey stuff... just good, analog-like tone that doesn't cost a fortune. I saw at MusicToyz they have the SIB Mr. Echo and the Pro Tone TV Delay, but it's so hard to know what's good. Any recommendations?

i'm loving the memory lane. it's not cheap, but it's a far cry from an echoczar or TTE in price. it's nice to have the modulation and the available tap tempo. if you're looking for depth and ambience, i think slightly modulated delays will really help.

Try this site:

You can search by effect type instead of specific builders.

The SIB has me interested. They are a good company.

You could always try your luck in getting an Analogman Delay. Only about $150 if you can catch them when they go on the website.

G - There are some great ones out there... And sometimes price point does kind of separate things out... So here's my recommendations based upon my old experience with DM2's, AD9's, Space Echos, Way Huge Aqua Puss, and Echoplexes.... I'll try to give at least 2 recommendations for each used price level...
$240 or less...
vintage Boss DM2 or 3, the yardstick for some
CMATMODS Deeelay, a superb analog sounding digital with a great price from www.cmatmods.com (http://www.cmatmods.com) . The least expensive pedal noted here. Cool cat doing cool effects. I will likely never sell this one, but will use it on one of my 3 boards. And will likely snap up other CMATMODS pedals...
Homebrew Mimic II, true bucket brigade analog delay. On my very small board now and bought from www.supersoundmusic.com (http://www.supersoundmusic.com)
$375 or less...
Diamond Memory Lane, ultra thick, tap tempo, lotsa features that are not found elswhere.
Maxon AD900 or 999, good all-around unit very popular and available. 999 has more delay time available.
$500 or more...
Fulltone TTE.... FLAT OUT, MY FAVORITE TONE and complete package of features... Addictive, will change your playing; just like the old Echoplex did... Only this one is sooooo much better to me.
Never played, so I can't comment....
Tone Czar... I'm on the list...
DLS Echotap
Analogman Delay... I've been fishing, but have not snagged one yet...
Mad Professor BJFE Deep Blue Delay... Hittin' the streets now.... I believe in stock at www.makenmusic.com (http://www.makenmusic.com) and www.musictoys.com (http://www.musictoys.com) .
Good Luck!

Delay is definitely my go-to non-dirt pedal. I've added a compressor and trem, but I don't think I could live without delay. If going analog, I would look at something that that goes above the 300ms so you can get that deeper sound you are looking for. The Memory Lane is the next delay pedal I'm looking at for that.

I'll put in my vote for the AD900. You can find them used for not too much; not cheap, but they are nice and warm. They are great at giving just what you describe. They have that nice, analog warmth and they are very straight forward and easy to get great delay sounds out of.

my keeley modded ad-9 is the best i've had for adding ambience and non-intrusive repeats.
i've owned:
TTE (Insane ... Amazing ... Expensive)
Blackbox Quicksilver (Awsome! but noisy ...)
Diamond Memory Lane
Maxon AD999
Pigtronix Echolution
Line 6 Echo Park
Line 6 DL4
DD20
... probably some others as well.

I had an Analogman modded Maxon AD9 and I didn't think it had enough delay time for ambient times. Even maxed out on delay time it seemed too quick to me.
