I'm looking to replace some pups (particulalry the bridge) in a epiphone les paul class a custom and Epiphone SG
I"m after pretty versitile sound (i'vr gotten over new metal) I play in church and youth worship events allot so thats the kinda classic edge/brit invasions sounds, as well as playing in some harder rock bands (think audioslave, foofighters, hold steady) looking for something that will sound great clean and dirty, nice highs but not missing in lows.

i kinga don't want o spend more than £40 per pickup and after changing the bridges would maybe like something exotic in the necks (filtrons or lipstick tube style hums or humbucker sized p90)
About a year or two ago i got given a duncan design jb style bridge pup that had some nice sparkle to it (a bit to much maybe) and lacked lows for chugga chugga, thats in my lp at the mo, i then picked up a cheap GFS fat PAF that is in my SG and doesn't really inspire me.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience of either GFS or Kent Armstrong pups (there the only brands that do in my price range) thinking vintage paf or slightly hot rodded humbuckers not distortion buckers.
Also on the off chance does anyone have any Catwhisker pup's their a uk hand wound pickup company/guy that are remarkably cheap £40 so in my price range.
Am very tempted but wonder at the low price. Do you guys think they will be better than the GFS of KA's.

Any advice much appreciated

A couple of other contenders to consider would be Mighty Mite and Schaller Golden Age humbuckers. I have used both as economical replacements and really like their sound. The Schallers sound a tad brighter and open. Here are links to a couple of stores that sell them.

Schaller: http://www.stewmac.com/

Good luck!

Save up and put a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge and a Seymour Duncan '59 at the neck. It should make that guitar come alive.

+1

I've owned a handful of their pickups, and they've all been great. The Premium Alnico II's (Strat pickups) that are in my guitar now sound fantastic.

I also recommend the GFS pickups. I've got a set of the vintage ones in my strat, and they sound great!

The other guitarist in my band uses a few of the GFS pickups, and I have to say they sound pretty good!
