How bizarre. But I wouldn't diss it w/o a thorough investigation.

Vision, or hallucination?

I have a 1965 P-Bass, I had it refin'd in 1999 (Black Nitro) and restored to all original specs. I will never sell it, it was my Dad's. It sounds amazing and is sought after by friends to use for recordings and such.
I don't know how this one sounds but $3K is a lot of cash for an extremely ugly modification that certainly ruins any kind of collectability. It may sound amazing though and that certainly trumps looks.

What's the strap button on the back of the headstock for?

They come that way from the factory.

Cut a block of ash to fit the hole, remove the extra controls, paint the bass an opaque color, and we're good to go.

I love the way the description just casually says "one added Fender pickup" :).
It's funny - if that was a Jazz pickup, fitted 'right', no-one would worry about it...
I'd still fill it and refinish though. Either that or fit it with a Rick 4001 bridge pickup - that should just about cover the hole... ;)

Just a couple of days older than mine...The first number isn't a date, it's the neck code. 5 = Precision Bass, 7 = Jazz Bass. The necks are only dated by the month.
(6 = Bass VI, 11 = Bass V, 17 = Mustang and Musicmaster Bass, 18 = Coronado Bass, 23 = Telecaster Bass. There are ones for the guitars as well of course.)
The letter at the end is the width, but you probably knew that :).

I knew about the letter, I didn't know about the number.
(actually, thinking about it- yeah I knew that- as I recall 4 is a Jazzmaster, and it's the way to tell if you've for some reason got a Jazzmaster neck on a Strat body- I remember that thread here...)

They come that way from the factory. Ok, we know why it's there, but what is it for? Same thing with the 'thumb rest' being on the treble side of the strings. :messedup*puzzled*

To affix the strap- like Brian Wilson used it.

Yeah, there was no strap lug on the upper horn.
Unless you unscrewed the one from the headstock and moved it to the body...

You hook your three or four fingers over the rest, and play with your thumb. :)
