View Full Version : Chopped my .10 E-string with a Sperzel

I changed strings on my new (used) Suhr Pro guitar yesterday and I chopped the .10 gauge E-string when I cranked down the button on the Sperzel tuner. I had another guitar with Sperzels and never encountered this problem no matter how hard I cranked down that button. Needless to say, now I'm going to be in constant fear that I might chop that string when changing it or that I have a sharp edge and the string might be more prone to popping.
Anyone else experience this or have any comments??

um, that's .010, not .10., unless you are playing bass.
Are Sperzels the same locking tuners Fender uses? No, never had a string get cut by a locking tuner before. Probably got kinked during installation, and broke when you tightened the locking thingie (that's the technical term ;) )
See, you are stronger than you think!
Perhaps Sperzel has changed the turn ratio on the locking knob, making it easier to get more leverage?

Happened to me a few years ago on a D string. It stopped after awhile, maybe they need to be "broken in"...

Nothing is unpossible!
I had it happen once if I remember right. Never was a reacurring problem.
Hopefully you'll have the same experience.
Good luck.

Easy to do, if you twist a bit too hard. One more reason I'll never put Sperzels on another guitar.

"um, that's .010, not .10., unless you are playing bass."
No WONDER my hands are so sore.
For now on I'll apply a little less torque than I'm accustomed to. If it becomes a recurring problem, I'll assume I've got a sharp edge in there and get it taken care of.
Thanks for the replies.
