There's a seller trying to sell an Alembic Series II bass on ebay. I emailed them and asked for other pictures and where the bass is located. No response. If you do a search, you'll notice the exact same bass being sold by 2 different ebay names with the same aol account name.

This sucks...I can't believe people try to do this.

I saw that posting, and my spidey senses were tingling. There is a sketchy listing for a Wal Geddy Lee as well....

Sucks.

I got taken by a guy selling an amp recently. Through PayPal. The guy was a longtime EBAY member (5 years) and had 100% positive feedback. I didn't use my credit card. PP is not covering the loss because the guy ended his membership and had falsified info through EBAY. I later found out through a paid search that the guy was the actual guy on the account. I have his name and address a few states away (8 hour drive). I reported it to law enforcement, and they really don't care.

I'm done with it. I'm not smart enough any more to sniff out who is legimitate or not.

FWIW, both auctions are gone now. :)

That really sucks. I've not yet been fleeced (237 successful e-bay transactions) but I'm hearing more and more about people getting ripped off. If E-bay/PayPal (same company I believe) won't do better to compensate for such occurances it may well be the beginning of the end for them.

What scares me is that a lot of EBAY people are moving to the emporiums here. Saves them EBAY fees. I've never had a bad deal with a TGP'er but I see more and more people in the emporium with one or two posts, both selling, or alluding to their EBAY auctions. What did happen is I got burnt on a deal with a dude on HC. I've seen his name pop up here now. People are actually starting to call TGP "EBAY" lite. Scarry. I won't do business with anyone on this page who is not a somewhat senior member or a contributing member. Because here, you have no recourse whatsoever. I also google around to other sites that have "emporiums" or "gear for sale" forums, and see those same names everywhere. I wrote Brian Scherzer about this, but I really don't see anything the Admins/Mods can do, that won't affect the good guys on this board, also. Oh well, "Buyer Beware" I guess.

If a guy has a lot of legit posts on TGP, you can ussually tell if he really has the amp or not. He's probably posted on how great it is a million times. :) I find those safe.
I don't buy from new posters, or posters who haven't mentioned the item at least once in the past.
If its a high dollar item on TGP you can also get a phone number and talk to the guy.
Always works for me.

As for EBay, I don't bid more then I can afford to lose. If its a high dollar items, I insist on the $2000 coverage from Paypal. Anything over $2000 I feel I may lose. Like alanbass1, I've spent thousands of dollars on EBay and the only things I've gotten messed up is when I didn't read the ad all the way and missed obvious clues like when there is no mention of a power supply being included.

Also, if I get leary on EBay, I ask for other photos of something obsure just to see if the guy can take one.

Just as an FYI, PayPal will not cover you for $2,000. They say they will, but read the fine-print. It's a lot more complicated than that. They gave me $200 out of $1750.

All of my transactions have been pleasent on TGP. I hope it stays that way. It is really a great way for musicans to network etc.

If you can drive somewhere to pick up something large it is probably worth it.

I mostly blame ebay/paypal for turning a blind eye to such issues and not standing by the buyer who has been scammed by a registered seller , who they are supposed to have screened and monitored . If ebay/paypal cannot find better methods to deal with such activities then it WILL self destruct . Kind of lame a multi million ( billion? ) dollar business can't do more for victoms of fraud that has occured right on their service they offer . Yeah , read all the ebay rules and paypal terms you want , it's all lawyer double speak to protect their collective asses :BITCH:mad:

I bought an original Marshall guv'nor off ebay a couple of years ago...listed as being in excellent condition by the seller, who had a 100% positive feedback score and many sales under his belt...pedal showed up with a broken input and sticky footswitch (literally would stick and not return after being pressed. I emailed him regarding the condition the pedal was in. He was a real jerk...said the pedal was in perfect condition when he sent it to me...said I was probably being heavy-handed with it and broke it myself. Then he had the balls to offer to give me back my money if I would just send the pedal back to him.
I didn't feel like losing the pedal AND my money so I cut my losses...the pedal works... I just need to replace some parts...

screw ebay.
