View Full Version : G&L S-500 going under the knife!

I've decided that me and the MFD pickups weren't getting along so well in the S-500 so......I'm having a Suhr DSV humbucker routed into the bridge and Seymour Duncan SSL-2s put into the neck and middle positions. I plan on keeping the S-500 wiring the same. I'm interested to hear what all 3 pickups will sound like on in the 2 and 4 postions and what the neck/bridge combo will sound like in the 1 and 5 positions. I'm having the work done at Buffalo Brothers in Carlsbad. Anyway....here's the patient:

I know....only 6 months old. It's tough...but in the end, the results should be much more agreeable.

Every success - great guitars and Buffalo Bros are very respected.

Mt Legacy is about to be admitted...well I'm the Dr. so.....
Either Fralin VH/SP43, Lollar BLondes, or Suhr FL's. Also gonna go with standard blender wiring instead of the G&L config. Pop a cap in it, orange drop or Jensen 0.022uF and maybe I'll squeeze the last 15% of tone I want outa this killer axe.

Don't take this as pejorative, nothing personal, just my opinion... but...
...that would be a completely retarded idea...
only if I didn't know you were totally cool.
Like if some OTHER dumbass said that, I'd say "there are better guitars for beater hack-o-matic platforms, AND there are plenty of guitars that have this kind of layout without hack-chop-route-f-ing-up a perfectly sweet axe."
And I'd say (to that completely imaginary asshat) "you do realize that any gear that is hacked is going to be worth less, period? don't even start to try to argue how great the other pickups are... doesn't mattter. a Ferrari with a paint job that is 10 times better than the factory is worth 1/10 of the value, and that only goes double for guitar gear. when was the last time you saw somebody say 'gee I really want to find a super clean version of X guitar that's been routed out and had some other random lame bedroom playing dude's idea of the perfect pickups stuck in it!'. check e-bay... anything that is even slightly personalized ain't worth shit... OK if you think you're keeping this guitar for the rest of your life and are going to be buried or cremated with it, then I'm all behind it, but otherwise, what the heck are you thinking..?"
yes that is what I would say to some other asshat who thought this was a good idea. not that I'm saying it now... but I would.. if that was the case.
and why the hell did (that other completely imaginary moron) bother being vaguely interested in the S-500 if (that fictional dude) didn't have any interest in the MFD's? i just don't understand (why he's so mind numbingly stupid)...
finally for the idiotic cash (that stupid farqwad) is going to spend on the conversion... Why doesn't (that inbred mongoloid idiot) just start saving for:
1. a 'pure' bright twangy, sharp, single coil Strat (which admittedly the S-500 doesn't do perfectly)
AND / OR...
2. a really sweet humbucker axe of your (I mean 'his') choice (especially because an overpriced booteek humbucker elmer's glued into the bridge position of a Strat isn't going to emulate a Les Paul anyway...)
Taking a great guitar then turning it into a mediocre, indistinct, no-personality hacked up piece of crap for extra money is just stupid... In my opinion, that is. Nothing personal.
Like if somebody else did it it would be completely moronic, but it's cool in your case. Rock on! Wooo hoo! Peace Out, yo! Post sound clips!

Um - correct me if I'm wrong but don't G&Ls with pickguards still have the universal (or bathtub) route "under the hood"?
Aren't we really only talking about getting a new pickguard that is routed s/s/h and only moving over the pots & switches? In other words, a completely reversable modification.
If G&L has recently changed to individual routes, then I will stand corrected.

My Legacy is only a few weeks old and has a pool route, I can tell by pressing on the PG. On the S-500, I dunno. I would assume this guy has looked under the hood at least and isn't jumping to conclusions.

Really? There are cheaper guitars with a vintage white/pearl finish, G&L Saddle Lock bridge, 4 ply toroise shell, 12 inch radius, rosewood fretboard, with Schaller locking tuners, PAF'esque humbucker, two classically voiced single coils, and the pickup expander toggle wired for 7 way options? Really? And....dare I say....ones already properly routed for a SSH configuration....cheap?!? Really?
Hmmmm...I'm thinking that I've found a stock guitar with all the non electronic features I like and that I don't plan to sell. As far as "random lame bedroom playing dude," bro that's just funny...ignorant...but funny.
and why the hell did (that other completely imaginary moron) bother being vaguely interested in the S-500 if (that fictional dude) didn't have any interest in the MFD's? i just don't understand (why he's so mind numbingly stupid)...
Hmmm...the MFDs came with the guitar. I bought the guitar without ever plugging it into an amp. Why? Because the acoustic tone and sonic resonance were a thing of beauty....especially for the price. But Christ....I better tell Lollar, Fralin, Kinman, Seymour, and the rest to close down shop. Stock is where it's at fellas and Walmarts always hiring. We must all be "mind numbingly stupid" for wanting to expand the electronic horizons within such guitars.
finally for the idiotic cash (that stupid farqwad) is going to spend on the conversion... Why doesn't (that inbred mongoloid idiot) just start saving for:
1. a 'pure' bright twangy, sharp, single coil Strat (which admittedly the S-500 doesn't do perfectly)

Thanks for being concerned about my cash, but that's Mrs. Badger71's job. I think my next purchase will be a Fuchs TDS....that I'll send to Two Rock for some mods.....:) Try not to have a cow over it.
Taking a great guitar then turning it into a mediocre, indistinct, no-personality hacked up piece of crap for extra money is just stupid... In my opinion, that is. Nothing personal.
Thanks...the guitar is great. I'm taking it a step further to make it better, in my opinion. This is so I can create the music that I like with the sonic tools that I'll need to help with my inspiration.
Post sound clips!
Sorry, I'm more of a live player....on a stage...in front of people.

You are correct sir! I do have a "pool" route under the pickguard and Chandler sells the 4 ply tortoise pickguards for about 80 bucks with an added charge for any "upgrades" to design. If for some reason, I want to go back to a SSS setup, I will order the guard without the added charge.
