I've played G&L's and they just don't feel right to me, something about them just somehow feels cheap to me. and this is the standard models i am talking about, not the tributes.

I'll prefer fender.

I haven't really priced them but I imagine you could get a 52 reissue for around that price, maybe that's a little optimistic. If you looked around you could find an MIJ version which are great, and have somehing left over for new pickups if you felt the need.

I had a Highway One telecaster that was very nice, but I recently purchased an American Ash Telecaster for slightly less than $700 from a fellow TGP'er and it is one heck of a guitar. IMO, the pickups are a perfect blend of vintage tone and modern tone. If you really want vintage tone, you could go the rought of the AV 52, but don't look past the American Ash tele. The only thing I don't like about the American Ash is the molded case, but who plays the case anyway?

+1 on the MIJ '52 Tele RI's. Fantastic instruments at a very reasonable price. (Thanks Radish!)

MIJ Tele reissues - killer. I had a 90's model that was magical. I'm gonna get me another one soon. Anyone wanna buy a Schecter PT Fastback?

I got one of those. It did need a pretty good amount of work both mechanically and electronicaly, but it came out pretty good and was even cheaper that that when I got it (on sale). At least it's something decent to work with...
