...Marshall or Avatar?
I'm looking at buying one but it's kind of pointless if my Avatar sounds 95% as good. I've never heard one before.
Does anyone here have experience or opinions on the quality of construction and tone of the Dr. Z best cabinets?

Make no mistake Dr. Z's cabs are great. The wood is top notch as is the construction. The thing you'll notice is that Z's 2x12cabs, being thiele ported, are quite a bit louder than other similiar cabs.

1. Impeccable construction
2. HEAVY
3. Big, full, and loud, and bassy.
4. The perfect "ying" for the generally bright "yang" of the Z amps.
5. I play mine thru a Maz 38 and a Boogie LSC. With the LSC, the mids and trebles on the amp are always at about 3/4 wherein the bass is at about 1/4 (but its a pretty bassy, dark head to begin with).
6. Its on the short list of top notch closed back cabs. I think it dusts the Boogie Rectifier cabs, for example.

this was exactly my experience recently w/ the Dr. Zed route 66. tried it w/ a number of 2-12's (vox fawn tolex 2-12 AlNiCo, THD 2-12 some 4-12s) but it really didn't come into it's own until i used the Zbest cab. i had to elevate the cab quite a bit to record it w/o the midbass sounding too thick.
i'm still lusting after a route 66/Zbest combo.

I had a Z and an Avatar at the same time with the same speakers and had time to do the A/B comparison. I sold the Avatar. But it was by no means a simple decision. If you're looking at a percent of how much better - I think it may be a personal preference thing.
FYI - I sold the Avatar to my cousin who loves it with his Silverface Bassman.

Thanks everyone for chiming in. :)
I like the Avatar too quite a bit, but I do have a Dr. Z Prescription ES head and it would be cool to have a matching cab. If it gives me better bass response ( which it sounds like it will ) it would probably be a worth while move. Heavy is the only thing I heard that I don't like ..... but I suppose I could always put casters on it :messedup

seems like U've answered Ur own question.
the THD is a nice a nice cab, but my experience tells me that the Dr. Zed's are voiced really nicely for their own cabs.
not that heavy, either. no where near as heavy as a 4-12 or an oversized 2-12.

The Z-Best might be my favorite and most used cabinet of all my cabs.
My two cents worth.
As a side note .... a lot of my Marshall clients love the Z-Best as well. The ported design has a number of cool aspects in it's favor.

Port City Wave 2x12 is the finest 2x12 I've tried to date...replaced my 4x12 !!!
Quality build, not too heavy & the centrally placed handle on the top makes it very easy to carry. Just a HUGE sound coming from a front ported, closed back cab.
Do a search here.....there are more happy customers than me !!! :D
