Ok all you whose ears still work. Which should it be??? :-)
I borrowed 3 fairly high-end speakers from Moss yesterday and made some short (approx. 30 sec. each) comparison clips last night. I mounted them in my Mesa 1x12 wide cab and changed nothing else for the recording. Mic was an SM57 about 1-1/2" of the grille cloth, right near the edge of the cone.
Tell me what you think about the tone (not the playing :jo) of each.
Loren

Clip 2 (http://www.adlibmusic.net/dlite/media/must_2.mp3)
Clip 3 (http://www.adlibmusic.net/dlite/media/must_3.mp3)

All constructive critcisms welcome!

I liked 3 by a small margin over 1.

A suggestion... try using a touch of reverb on the guitar (room, plate, etc) to let it sit in the mix more naturally and breathe a bit. You'll get a more open and natural sound. Right now you have the track and this very dry guitar sound, like your ear is right next to the speaker, which isn't what listening to guitar is normally like. Robben Ford always has reverb on his recordings and it's an integral part of his recorded tones.

Funny you should mention that. I did have reverb in the mix, but took it out for the compare....I think I'll remix with the 'verb added.

I like #2 the best followed by #3. I liked the way the high end was a little smoother.

Please let us know what speaker was what. I haven't completely decided on what I'll be using when I get my D'lite together.

Thanks,
mR

#1 is a Celestion greenback g12m, 75hz bass resonance; 15 ohm
#2 is a Jensen alnico Blackbird (this thing weighs about NOTHING!) 8 ohm
#3 is a Celestion g12 alnico gold 8 ohm

Hey Loren -
Out of the three, the Alnico Gold was the worst. I wasn't impressed with the Greenback either.
The Jensen Blackbird was the best out of the three. . . to my ears, anyway.

The Dumble 1 12" combo uses EV for a speaker,
the 2 12" cabs are loaded with Celestion Blues.

I like...in order...

Best: Celestion greenback g12m, 75hz bass resonance; 15 ohm
Then: Celestion g12 alnico gold 8 ohm
And lastly: Jensen alnico Blackbird

The Greenie seemed to be most expressive to me, but I can see why some might like the darker tones for this tpe of sound.

Thanks for the sample! Next time give it a few days or a week before the reveal. :)

i thought the greenback was way too bright.
i'm surprise how dark the jensen sounded.
the celestion hi wattage AlNiCo had nice midrange definition and might be what i choose.
i'd like to hear the jensen w/ more highs from the amp.
that might be very nice.

You should hear the Gold combined with the Heritage G12-65. It's the best of both worlds.

Very interesting.
I still need to decide on speakers for mine so I listened to all 3 before I read anyone elses comments.

The Greenback was my clear favourite. Fat enough but with bite, like a Jack Russell guarding a pie shop.

The Jensen was smooth like 5 times filtered mud. Not my thing at all.

The Gold was good but a bit tubby and polite, like an obsequious fat man asking for another cake.

Damian.

Went back and listened to all the clips again. The Celestions had too much fuzz. Not smooth to my ears.
Although the Jensen is a bit dark, it was the least fuzzy one.

My ears like 2 the best, followed by 3 and then 1 the least.

I liked #1 as well, but I really can't do any "quality" listening through my computer speakers. The other two just didn't have any bite. Must be that Jack Russel thing. ;)

#1 was "super vintage" sounding.
#3 was "vintage like"
#2 was more modern

Right now I am in vintage mood so I liked #1 the best, however that might change by next week :crazy.

Absolutely!
I do strongly suspect that "in the flesh" so to speak, I would find the greenback a little harsh and the gold would be my choice.

How about some clean clips with the same speakers?

I've found the Gold to have super excellent clean tones. Plus, I like the Gold paired with a ceramic speaker like the Heritage G12-65 for OD tones.

that's the way i hear it too, thru apogee DA16X and genelec 8030a and subs.
i think w/ the amp presence and treble adjusted accordingly, there might be the smoothness and not quite as dark sounding.
i have 6V6s in my ODS right now and am digging it. JJs are the only 6V6s that will take the 500+ volts.

I did forget to mention that my D'Lite currently has old (I bought them new in the early 80's) Mesa Boogie STR 420's in it....what a bonehead....

I have the G12-65 and the whole morning free tomorrow. I will put something up with my D'Lite and that speaker to toss into the mix.

My Dad has 2 Jack Russell's, and he's got scars all over his hands...

I liked #2. I heard the Jensen in a Fuchs ODS50 at Lincoln Street music. Nice speaker.

I just got an old pair of 1265's and will give them a work out this week. To my ears they sound similar to my RWB. Maybe just a bit more focused, with less bottom. So far so good.

I'd like to try an Alnico. I'm thinking Weber Alnico 1265. Might be nice to mix them.

Did you hear John Findlay's clips with the Greenbacks? Pretty nice...

BTW Norm, How's that HRM workin' out? :drool

We'll be lookin' for that!!!!

I went back to 6V6's and I like the gold in the 1x12 cab...today....my ears are changing what I hear (or don't hear) daily.

jspax7 - John's greenbacks are killin'!!! Of course, the Fuchs is no slouch either and his playing is over the top!

In order of preference: 3, 1, 2. At least through the speakers for my computer, #3 and #1 sound richer and thus seem to compliment the amp's capabilities better than #2.

How would the Jensen Blackbird and a Celestion GH12 65 sound together is my question ?

I prefer the
1. Jensen - light and airy
2. Greenback - dull and gritty
3. Gold way to thick and heavy and mush with double stops

With a selection of pedals you could take the Jensen and add the grit and thickness but you could not take the other two speakers into the Jensen area.

Could you post a similar track with a GH 12 65 by any chance ?

Loren,

I vote for two. Smoother High end - a little sweeter.

Tuff call had to run them several times. Other takes are are little more open, but more grainy to my ears.

I know this is old but I just found it. Very nice demos, thanks. I listened to each clip a few times and my preference is 3, 1, 2. I thought both the Celestions sounded great but the Jensen really fell short with this amp to my ears.

I like the Gold #3. I have an EV12L in my dlite 44 combo cab. I'd like to hear it with the Gold.
I have three Jack Russells and I don't have any scars on my hands, but can't say the same for my shoes. Still, my favorite pooches on the planet.

Wow, I was surprised to see this resurface. :)
I just listened to them again and I think I should update this post with a couple of others. Stay tuned, if interested....

I just went back to an ev12L, but it's an older original and it does it for me.

Looks like I never posted that G12-65 clip.
Here it is with the BN D'Lite 22 with the small BN open back cab.
