View Full Version : 15" Speaker recommendations
I just picked up a nice Trace Elliot 1x15 ported cab. It is an old one. The original speaker has been replaced and the new one is very middle frequency biased.
Can anyone recommend a 15" speaker that will have a smooth frequency response and good low end control? It will be used with a 350 watt Trace Elliot head and possibly a TE 4x10. Many different musical types.
Thanks in advance.

I've had pretty good results with a Emi Kappa Pro.

I've played through a Mesa cab with a 400-watt Electro-Voice EVM-15L and it sounded great. Very even response with a huge low-end. EV's are a bit pricey, though.
No personal experience with Emi 15's, but there are a lot of them in use and I haven't heard anything negative.

i'm getting ready to order an emi kappa pro. but my hands down fave is the old EV 15B. not the L, the L's break up waaaay too early in the mids. that's what mesa used for their cabs, why i'll never know. 'cause if you want fat the 15B is the bomb. discontinued. i'm waiting to hear reports on the DL15X to see how it compares to the 15B....

The Mesa cab I used was a former bandmates, but I did play through it several times and I don't remember having issues with the mids. Maybe he had the amp set up to compensate? It was an SVT and there was a rackmount eq (MXR I think. It was blue). The problem with the 15B is that it's only rated at 200 watts.
Edit:I'm not 100% sure that it was a 15L. He told me that it was, but I never saw for myself.

ahh, right you are, 200 watts. i think the new ones are 400. if it has the thicker cone of the 15B i bet it's a pretty slamming speaker

I used to really like the 400w EV 15. I've still got one in a cab- but whatever speakers SWR used/uses in their 15 cabs are the cat's pajamas.
They're unmarked- I don't know if the speaker in my Triad cab is a PAS speaker or what- it just sounds big, full and enveloping- much moreso than any "older" 15s.

I've got an old Roland Supercube 100 that needs a new 15" speaker and was wondering if the Emi Kappa Pro would be suitable or overkill? What else would suit?

+1 on the EV unless you want to go bigger bucks with JBL perhaps!

Old Gauss speakers are still unbeatable if you can find one.
