I have some input jacks on an amp that make a loud popping sound when the 1/4" plug going into the input is slightly bumbed or pulled. I think this is a relatively easy fix--my question is whether I can safely work on the jack without risk of getting shocked (without draining the caps).

Actually, while I am at it, any suggestions regarding what the issue might be?

What amp is it?
Yes, you can work on it without getting shocked. It's most likely a bad contact or a loose wire. (assuming it's the jack itself).
I had the exact same problem with my old Mesa a while back..I panicked and thought the amp blew up, but a little contact cleaner solved the problem. :jo

My Peavey Classic 50 does the same thing. When you say use contact cleaner, exactly what do you mean? Is is a spray that i would shoot in the jack? I thought that I would need to replace the jack but it is attatched to the circuit board and I didn't want to mess with it

Yes, it's basically the spray can that blasts air (the thing you use to clean computers etc).
I didn't think of it being attached to a PCB actually...it's still possible to work with, but it might be a bit more difficult.
