John English, the well known Fender Custom Shop Master Builder, passed away yesterday, or the day before. Hats off to a great luthier who created so much pleasure for us musicians by crafting beautiful and toneful guitars. Our prayers and thoughts go out to his family, friends, Fender, and the greater musical community.

He was a great builder and friend... who made terrible eggs (he knows what I mean). May he rest is peace. He loved building Fender guitars, and it showed.

Goddamit.

I was saddened to learn he was sick a while ago, and this is not any more fun at all.

I was lucky to have worked with John on a couple of his projects back in the day. Hanging with him was even more fun. Great builder, cool personality.

JP, remember all the Altoid boxes? I wish he'd stuck to those and not been so fond of the smokes.

A smooth journey to you, John English.

RIP John, best of the master builders. I was told John was terminally ill a while ago, by a CS dealer a few months back.
I have a Jeff Beck tribute Esquire built by John. It is the best playing I've ever played.

Very sad news although forseable.
He made among the very best guitars ever delivered by the Custom Shop.
Whenever I'll put my hand again on one hancrafted by him- I do have many- my first toughts will go to him, then I'll hear him say" Play it Man, play it, don't let it hang on the wall"
Condolences to his Family

shoot, he was the best guy we meet at NAMM when we took him Stratocaster 0001 to inspect..

what caused his death?

seems so ashamed to loose him, and it seems too sudden on this end, he was still young!

My condolences to his friends and family

RIP John,

Oh major boo! Wow I was just asking about him a few weeks back wondering how he was doing. John was so much fun to work with and had a great balance of builder, artist, comedian and someone you were proud to call your friend. Listening to John, Alan Hamel and Fred Stuart argue like old women over vintage guitar specs and the "Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh" phrase, it was pure daily comedy like reenacting “Grumpy Old Men”.

The entire crew for the JP reign was nothing shy of stellar genuine people yet all individual characters in their own right and made waking up and going to work extremely fun. I’ve missed not seeing English in the past many years but now he will be sadly missed forever, he was truly an inspiration to me as a friend and a builder. The very first Baker guitar #001 was made from a piece of wood he gave me, he had been saving it for a special project. He had so many stories from days working at Gibson, Valley Arts or building the LJ models with Mike Stephens in the early Fender C/S days. I can easily say John taught me many things and was a true mentor.

I’ll miss ya Johnny, burn a lead for me and I’ll do the same. RIP…
