Yes I confess, I bought one of these when they first came out. I used it for vocals on one song and thought it was so bad it has been sitting on the shelf for about 2 years. The other day I was goofing around with some guitar tracks and I broke it out and miked up my Mesa Rectoverb and My Fender Blues Jr and recorded some tracks. They came out KILLER! Haha, I love this kind of stuff :D

Almost all studios with their $8K-$20K Neumann's will have the MXL990 in their collection as well.... so you are in a good company.

I record stuff for fun at home and have a couple of cheap MXLs. I could use "real" mics and I'd still sound like a hack recording stuff in my house. Everything has a place & purpose.

I have one of the early "Mogami" versions of that mic. I use it for exactly the same purpose and nothing else. Sitting in front of a 2/12 cab that thing sounds fantastic.
Of course anywhere else I use it . . . .
But it's GREAT on guitar.

Croakus, how does one tell if they have a "Mogami" version 990? What's the dif between that version and newer ones? I have one of the original ones and like most people learned it definitely has it's place.

I'm not laughing, either. I've used the occasional 990 to record acoustic guitars and they sound quite nice. Especially for the price!

Mine has Mogami printed on the mic under the model number. I plug it into the same junky XLR cable I use with all my project studio mics so it probably means nothing.

I bought a 990 and a 991 packaged together with an M-Audio 'Audio Buddy' pre-amp at a Memorial Day sale at G.C., all for $99. I love 'em. However, I had better results on vocals and acoustic guitar than a miced combo ~ Probably due to my lack of experience micing an amp ~
I like this LDC a lot, the often discounted price on MF is worth the shock mount alone.
