View Full Version : Blown Speaker? How do I know?

Should I be able to see evidence of a blown speaker on the cone, the coil, etc.?
I was playing my Alessandro Rottweiler, which has the stock Jensen C12N (yuck), and started getting a horrific strong buzz on the low notes. If I cut the bass way back, it goes away, and if I crank it it gets much worse. I have now dissembled the amp to see if I can find anything loose in there, and took out the speaker to check it out and see nothing visibly wrong with it. Having never blown a speaker, I am sort of in the dark here. I was going to change the speaker anyhow, but I am also worried it might be something else. any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
:AOK
I have blown a few, and normally, I couldn't tell by just looking at it. I tapped the cone, and they didn't pop like good speakers do.
In your case, you can tell, when you put the new one. It could be something else, but you're gonna put a different speaker anyway.
Have you tried the 9v battery test? Does the speaker visibly move when you attach the positive to one connection and negative to the other? If the movement is minimal, maybe a dropped voice coil? Also, try pressing on the back of the magnet when the speaker buzzes. I had a Celestion speaker that buzzed. When I pressed the back of the speaker lightly the buzz stopped. I used the razor blade fix by inserting it between the magnet and the speaker. Hard to explain without pictures...

If you gentley push in on the cone, you may hear the voice coil rubbing against the magnet. That's not good. If you push and it doesn't move, that's not good either.

Sounds blown to me, try a substitute to be sure. Seldom able to tell just by looking.

Oh yeah, it was blown to s**t. I just put a Red White and Blues in there, and it sounds killer!
I examined the speaker very carefully, (did not try the 9V battery trick), and to my eye, there was nothing visibly wrong with it.
Thanks for the feedback!
