Got to use a lot of cool mic's........

Drums:

Yamaha kit..........Various snares....

On the snare a Beyer Dynamic M 201 was employed, very nice natural sound, softens the high end but plenty of crack. (Dbx 165a for comp)

Inside the kick was an AKG D112 (Dbx 160 Xp comp), outside we used a Sennheiser E902.

On the hat was an AKG C460b.

On the rack toms were Sennheiser E904's.

Floor tom we used a Sennheiser MD421.

We used a single Earthworks Qtc-1 for the room.

All the above was routed into an RME Octamic pre......

Overheads were Neumann TLM 170's. (Mic Pre: UA 2-610's into Pendulum Ocl-2 compressor).

We had a Riedel crystal wine decanter (Suspended via a makeshift shockmount) in the room with an SM57 in it running to a Joe Meek just for a little extra spice which to mutilate sonically. It didn't crack!!! It certainly hummed though!

Bass Guitar:

Ken smith 5 string and a 70's Rickenbacker.

Ashdown combo amplifier 1x15.

Di into a 2-610 and a Neumann Fet-47 in front of the amp. A Summit TLA-100 was used for compression.

Very fat articulate sounds lots of ass coming out of those Ken Smith's. The Rick was a stellar rendition of the breed as well. I love Rick's, Ken Smith really has something going on too, gorgeous bass.

Guitars:

(My Gits) James Tyler SE HD loaded with Voodoo PU's, 2001 R8 Historic LP loaded with Jon Moore PU's.

Unknown vintage blonde ES-335.........

Amps:

Hiwatt 100 watt Original real deal. Sonic 4x12 Unknown speakers (Jensen maybe). This as mic'd up with a Sennheiser MD 441 into a UA 2-610 with a "Distressor" for compression. This amp was used for clean (HAH!) to mild crunch sounds.

VHT Pitbull 50ST. Bogner 2x12, V30's. This amp was mic'd with a Royer 122 and SM57. The Royer went to a Focusrite ISA 430 Producer Pack for pre, comp and EQ. The 57 went to another 2-610 channel. This amp was used for dirty and gained out tones mostly.

I brought a toybox fulla pedals. Klon, Analogman OD-9, Crunchbox, MXR flanger and phaser, Rogey Meyer vision wah, Fulltone Octafuzzz....etc.... I ferget the rest. We used the Klon the most, great box I'm glad I didn't sell it 4 years ago. Phase 90 made it to a track as well. I forgot the power supply for the flanger.

Anyhow it was fun. The amp room had some interesting sounds going on, lots of couches, steel beams, cement walls. We were getting a very cool reverberation going on that sounded like a cross between spring 'verb, plate with a very mellow dose of ring modulation. We were right by the railroad tracks too. We had both the passenger schedules and freight schedules. We wrote recording window times up on a white board. We sampled a freight train going by, looked to be over 100+ cars must of weighed 10,000 tons give or take. Can you say.................................

SUBS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyhow, we got 4 good drum takes and 4 good guitar takes for what is basically a 5 song EP. Vox will be overdubbed as well as lead gits etc....

The bass player had a great deal of good stuff going on but he wasn't quite focused so we'll be doing a bass session next weekend. We got some great sounds overall though. My Tyler with the Voodoo's and BPSSC was otherworldy sounding. I finally had gotten it put back together and rewired right before the session. Not neatly put together though, I'm going to bring it to Evan Gluck this week for proper wiring and re-assembly. Playing that guitar (for me) is like a great conversation with an old friend. The John Moore PU's and my R8 is a wonderful combo as well..........

When I have the pics ready and some decent ruff's I'll post more here.

I just wanted to share.........

Oh............!!!

All the above went into ProTools HD on a lovely Alienware machine running XP. No hiccups at all, we were even simulataneously writing to a firewire drive while tracking. 15,000 RPM SCSI.

Killer dude! I love guerilla sessions like that. Sounds like you guys have some great gear too.

We do a little thing called Camp Chaos every year. Same kinda thing but in a cabin. All improv, usually 10-12 guys. Drums, bass, 2 gits, percussion section, keys, 2-3 vocal mics. Fun stuff. We go to PT LE with a couple Apoggee converters. Great River, API, Daking pres. A couple Distressors, a Fatso, API 2500, Joe Meek compressors.

A Red mic, a couple Earthworks, couple of borrowed Neumans. Lot's of 57's and 58's.

Oh, and most importantly, a keg of beer! :)

I'd love to hear/see some stuff from the session. Sounds very cool.

Hah ha! Camp Chaos! Very Cool.... We had quite a bit of Sam Adams lying around. No beer 'til tracking was finished!
