I noticed in Vegas almost all the bass players and Guitar players were ampless. Anybody try this? If so could you share your results. Thanks.
It started out as a church rig, but for anything that's not on a big platform where I need to move air I'm using a POD XT Live. Got zero issues with tones, in fact it's more consistant sounding to me through the monitors than using just an amp to hear myself. It also gives me a lot more tonal flexability than just a single amp - at least in terms of having tones immediately accessible on presets. The key to it all is have a flexable enough monitor mix that you can get the bass you need without overwhelming others.
I also like the idea a lot better than having a sound guy stick a direct box between my bass and my amp and hoping that what folks hear out there sounds like what I'm hearing up here.

Our bass player uses one but so far I can't tell a big difference between that and just running direct into the board (no preamp)

I used a POD live for awhile and it works great with a little bit of tweaking. You've got to take some time and make sure that your output levels are constant from patch to patch though or you are likely to have one pissed off FOH engineer!

If you have an excellent monitor situation than it can work fine. If not, it's a miserable experience.
I used a Bass XTL for several years at a church I went to, and never did get a mix that I enjoyed. It really took alot of fun out of that gig.
