I cannot BELIEVE that no one has mentioned Scott Thunes. This guy is the bass Yoda. The Force is very strong in him. There is NOTHING he cannot play. Also honorable mention for Tom Fowler, who loses out to Thunes by a nearly imperceptible margin.

I think Chris Murphy of Sloan is also quite good, not classic, but for more or less being in an indie band, he knows what he's doing...it doesn't hurt that he pretty much fronts the band too...
