Thanks to a fellow TGP'er this one showed up last week - a shiny, very blue Vinetto Legato. Found a few chances to sit in to see what this beast would do but these are really just some early impressions. First, I am one of those guys who played the same 1950s Tele for decades and who had not bought another guitar until about 2 years ago. I stumbled across a Legato last year and got to give it a whirl and thought that this was a guitar I could have some fun with.
It is cool to see a guitar that plays with the relationship between wood, pickups and scale. A beautiful piece of lumber. The detail work is outstanding, the neck joint and nut are as tight as it gets, and the finish mirror perfect. I plugged straight into my 1955 Twin and played both in standard and open tuning, with pick and fingers - stuff ranging from the old Mayall chesnut "Hartley Quits" to Son House's "Death Letter Blues."
My first thoughts - ain't a Strat, ain't a Tele (too bad the name ASAT is taken). I was a bit apprehensive about the DiMarzios (the one I played had the Lollars) but they sounded clean and, although it took me a bit to get the hang of it, it was easy to dial in a nice but not over-the-top snarl on the Twin.
Anyway, here tis'. Whether it ultimately stays or not, this is a very sweet and fun guitar to play. Just sometimes life does get in the way of the plans you make.
