I was wondering if anyone had a Hughes & Kettner smaller tube amp combo like something from the new statesman series or their sort of budget amp Edition Tube 20th Anniversary. Trying to get out of the Cyber Twin I am currently using and I do not want a 100 watt Marshall again so I'm thinking smaller...
Thanks,
Patrick

The guy who brought gear to a jam when I lived in Nashville used two of the 20th anniversary amps. I liked them, they were really pretty good little amps.

If you guys did anything clean how much head room does that little beast have? I figure 20 watts can be possibly be enough and I want to get on that edge where the sweet spot is but I dont want to not have enough... so do you have any insight into that?

I have the edition tube 20th. It really depends on the tubes for the headroom and still you aren't going to have much crystal clean. I was running CV4024 (12AT7) for preamp and JJ's EL84's for power and I had a little more headroom. The speaker it comes with (Rockdriver) is a more efficient (50 watt and more db) then the Weber Blud Dog Ceramic (30 watt) I put in it (but the Weber sounds better!)
Lately I switched back to the Tungsol 12AX7 with TAD STR EL84's and I have less headroom but really like the breakup. I can set it at only 5 (11:00) and dig in and get some decent light OD or play lightly and have good clean. The Lead channel is a whole different beast. I put the AT7 in it a while back to try and bring some of the gain down in the lead channel. With AX7's the gain starts with a lot and can really get turned up into feedback squeeling saturation. Usually I set the gain up barely ad just turn up the volume on the Lead side.
It really depends on what type of music you play and what type of drummer you play with. I play mostly for church stuff so our volumes are lower (the beakup on 5 works great for me). When I crank it, 20watts can get loud. Even on five it really is too loud to play at the house with the kids home and dimed when I play at the church my wife can hear it at the house about 40 yards away.
I get together with a few others to jam and we play club volumes and the 20watts is just not enough if you want clean. It would probably do fine if you didn't need clean at higher volumes. Check around for used ones, or new sales on ebay. You can pick them up for under $500 if keep your eyes open. From what I heard if you need more headroom check out the Peavey Classic 30. Haven't ever compared the two but they are in the same price/class of amp. Hope the rambling helped.

It'll really depend on how loud you need. I think they do fine, but in some places with other musicians it really may not be enough. It is 20 watts, is a DRRI enough for you?

I've noodled with the Puretone combo, not bad for a new amp.
At 25watts it handled itself well and it didn't mind having a few effects in front of it.

The Puretone combo is the amp to own IMO. They can be found really cheap too. A friend of mine got one for $250 when GC was blowing them out. Nice cleans and killer drive. Good with pedals too. Probably the loudest 25 watt amp I've ever heard.
Real sleepers.....

For what I play it is perfect. Lot of variation with the coil tap. With the stainless steel frets it is very smooth to play. Played another high end guitar just under 2k range and the Carvin held it's own for much, much cheaper. You can find great deals on ebay on Carvin, especially if a CT4 comes up, everyone seems to bid a lot higher for the bling of the CT6.
The CT series is pretty amazing. Looks cool too! :RoCkIn
