View Full Version : Suggest some bass-centric CDs
Can anyone suggest some CDs with lots of good bass playing/tone? Anything rock, blues, fusion etc. I don't listen to much jazz, though I suspect there are some good bass players who play jazz (perhaps its time to try out some jazz?)
Thanks

Almost anything by Rush. I'm a big fan of theirs, and Geddy Lee is one of my favorites on the Bass.
Primus is a little strange but I like their style quite a bit (Les Claypool is a great player).
If you're looking for slap bass, check out Flea for Rock/Funk (he's also good at fingerstyle).
Check out Youtube for the greats listed by us in this forum. Especially Jaco.

Also, non bass centric CD's that have great playing in them would be Bela Fleck and the Fleck Tones Greatest Hits of the 20th Century (Victor Wooten) and David Lee Roth Eat'em and Smile (Billy Sheehan), Tool's Aenima and 10,000 Days (Justin Chancellor) and Iron maiden's "Piece of Mind"

Anyone who mentions the bass playing in Hot Tuna's "Burgers" is a friend for life.

"Trios"
Hot Tuna: the first album which is live, recorded in '69 I think. Jack and Jorma are locked throughout.

Anything by the Who (John Entwistle is my favorite bassist in all of Rock'n'roll), but especially:

Chris Squire in Yes, particularly basslines like the one from Roundabout on:

+1 on Geddy Lee in Rush, Billy Sheehan, Jaco, Stanley Clarke, and others mentioned here. (If you like Billy Sheehan, you should also look for stuff by Stu Hamm. He's amazing.)
Mark King from Level 42 is also worth checking out. His solo album, Influences, features some insane funk bass. He has mad chops.

I am digging the funk guys lately. Any old Meters is great stuff. George Porter Jr. is the Man.

For more recent funk stuff, I would give Dumpstafunk a shot. They are currently touring too.

Stu Hamm
Willie Dixon
Bobby Vega
Alphonso Johnson
I have always loved Billy Sheehans' playing, but not a big fan of his tone. For really huge low end tonal presence I would say Alphonso Johnson is the man. If you want to download a bunch of him playing sith Steve kimock for free, here they are....

Pretty much any show from 2002 has Alphonso doing small group improvisation within basic song structures. Really good quality for free. Especially that 11-23-02 show from Chicago. HUGE low end tone!

Early Red Hot Chilli Peppers stuff is pretty bass heavy and very old school funk sounding. It's always fun to listen to Flea and chad on the early records.

Renaissance Live at Carnegie Hall - (Jon Camp takes the Chris Squire sound to new melodic heights)
Indeed! Renaissance has been in heavy rotation in my car lately: Ashes Are Burning, Turn of the Cards, and the King Biscuit/Royal Albert Hall discs.
We played a bill with Renaissance back in '74, and I stole a set of (used) Rotosounds from Jon's kit, just for a souvenir; don't tell him! :)
