ok. i've always known he was a monster player but this is a nice showing of how easy he makes it look. takes a minute or two for him to come in as he is isolated in the vid. but it's worth the wait.
enjoy.

Wow. Interesting. I wish I could see isolated videos like this of other bassists. Very educational.

These (together with Baba O'Riley) are on the "The Kids Are Allright" double DVD.

A true great and one of the first bass players to really put a lot into the sound he got.

Thanks for the link.
Biggest surprize: use of feedback
Smallest surprize: adoring fan clammors past bass player to hug singer

There is an article in the new EQ with Pete and he talks about how John got his sound.

Lots of compression and a very, very light touch adds to a monster tone!
Awesome all the way. I miss the Ox.

He's so relaxed, it almost looks like he's just soundchecking.

This is from the same concert, and it's basically the best recording of Baba O'Riley ever... and Entwhistle's bass sounds GIGANTIC. Those first notes sound like whole chords. Ridiculous.

The Ox was a great player, and in addition was key in many innovations (like dual amp set ups, etc).

The Ox was and remains so far ahead of every other bassist who ever lived, their light won't reach him until time comes to a stop.

I just rented John's instructional video from Netflix.

His technique is so simple and laid back that it produces the most amazing sound. Where most bass players right hand is in perfect stature and position, and the fingers basically walk. John's kind of puts his right hand up by the neck and plucks it with the outside of the fingers, almost hitting the fretboard, so real shallow plucks.

But, he does use all four fingers too, because at that angle they all look like they are the same size. So the piny is right there with the other fingers. And, the angle does look like it requires as much strength either. So, the pinky's right there with the other fingers too.

And then the reason his left hand looks like it's flying in the wind is due to his middle finger just naturally pointing straight out,,,almost bad technique, but really personal comfortablness.

But, it's the sound of those shallow plucks seem to bring out that killer sound. On the DVD it looks like he's playing though a 12" combo guitar amp, and the sound just kills.

It's kind of a lame vid really, but just to get an up close. and slowed down, perspective of his technique is definitely worth the rent.

Talented guy on more than one instrument. I don't know who might compare to him in todays scene but I always thought he was above average during his era. I played bass in a band for a while in the 80's and I copped every lick I could from him. I always loved seeing his guitar collection chronicled in magazines of the day.

Part of his tone is his setup too. I understand his action is so low that most people would be unable to play it at all. That lets him use a real light touch.
